I'm planning on replacing my 320GB 5400rpm drive with a 500GB drive and am not sure which route to go. I can either get the Scorpio Blue for just the storage bump or the Scorpio Black for the storage bump and the rpm bump. I keep hearing that the heat and noise and vibration and battery life from the Scorpio Black is noticeably different. What say you? Which should I get?

RPM helps performance, fewer platters help heat and noise.
I'd choose a single platter, 7200rpm, 5 year warranty HD.

Buy a fresh battery while you're at it.

I hope it is a USB 3.0 enclosure because with USB 2.0 you may as well have gotten the slower drive since USB 2.0 would be the bottleneck. That is, unless the drive was a spare from an upgrade.

I would get the 7200rpm drive because the difference is really noticeable. However, I'm not overly concerned about the effect on battery life because my laptop is plugged in most of the time.

True, It is a USB2, Have it in that for taking it over to a friends and then direct connect when I get back to my home PC.

I have upgraded a number of lappies to Blacks and never experienced those problems. I think you will like the WD Black.

The Scorpio black doesn't use that much more power than the Blue. Look at the spec sheets. 7200RPM for the win, don't settle for 5400RPM.
I would suggest the new 750GB Scorpio Black! Around 115-120MB/s STR on the outer tracks and around 60MB/s on the inner tracks.

I have a Scorpio Black 250 in my Dell E4300 and it seems to work well. The battery life is still about 5 hours and to be honest, that plenty! Well for me at least. I have a Scorpio Blue in an external enclosure connected by eSATA to my E4300 and the difference in speed is noticeable.
