<Ron Burgundy>I love scotch... I love scotch... scotchy scotch scotch.</Ron Burgundy>

Ok... now that that's out of the way...

My girlfriend's brother has become a scotch drinker and last time we went to their place he gave me a "primer" on scotch. We had some Laphroaig, Johnny Walker Green, and one or two others I don't remember.

I'd like to bring him a bottle of scotch next time we go visit him. Anyone have any recommendations? I'd like to keep it around $50 per bottle. Maybe something somewhat obscure that he may not have had before. That might be difficult because I imagine he's had dozens of different kinds by now, but I know there are lots out there.

Could be a good time to a science experiment. Buy some meh scotch and some pretty good scotch, swap out the insides, and see if he can tell the difference.

It's Scotch Whisky. There is no E in Whisky.

Anyways:

You can't go wrong with Lagavulin 16, but I think that might be a bit over 50. Bruichladdich and Kilchoman are two less-known distillieries. Machir Bay goes for £40, which should be in roughly your range.

price range?

$30-40: Glenlivet/Glenfiddich 12
$40-50: MacCallan 12
$50-80: your choice really opens up, find something 'weird' and uncommon, something other than Glenfiddich 12, Glenlivet 12, McCallan 12;
if you want to be adventurous, try Hibiki 12, yes it's Japanese, but it's good. Unlike Yamazaki 12 which is yucky but that's another story

Balvenie doublewood is decent. If you find the 18y is a bit more expensive but so worth it.

I'm particular to Glenlivet 15y. I think it's even better than 18y And way better than the 12.

1) Macallan 64 Year Old in Lalique
Price: $460,000

And here it is, the most expensive scotch in the world: The Macallan 64 Year Old in Lalique! The scotch was sold for $460,000 at an auction at Sotheby's, New York on November 2010, breaking the record for the most expensive whisky ever sold, and claiming the title of world's most expensive scotch.

The special decanter was designed and created by famed French designer Lalique, and contains 1.5 litres of the rare "The Macallan" whisky. The special decanter, itself, is crafted with a unique "cire perdue", or "lost wax" method.

I'm sure he's had it before, but I don't think you could go wrong with anything Macallan.

I also enjoy Monkey Shoulder. It's on the cheaper side and it has almost none of the smokey/petey flavor. It doesn't compare to Macallan at all, but it's nice for what it is.

although we've done this a hundred times already ...

"cask strength" or "full cask" whisky is the only real whisky.

so arm yourself with some patience and a google and sort yourself out. find all the full cask whiskies you can, line them up by price, and start buying. only YOU can decide which one is best for you, but - in case i wasn't clear enough - any retail strength whisky (80 proof - 40%), is not real whisky.

Glenfiddich 15 yr old Solera is a very nice Single malt in the $50 dollar range. I think it is superior to GlenFiddich 18 personally.

Edradour is the smallest distillery in Scotland. That gives it some kind of "special" distinction. I don't find the whisky particularly noteworthy, but it's good.
