Screen fades to white?

I will try to explain this the best I can,

So recently my computer starting doing this weird thing, I will boot it up, it loads just fine but after being at the desktop for about a minute or two the screen just fades to white all of the sudden. It seems to freeze up and then the screen just starts fading in to white and I can't do anything, I booted in to safe mode and ran spybot and all of my anti virus stuff but came up with nothing.

Any ideas?

what type of screen is it? How old, what size, lcd, crt?

Could be the Backlight or the inverter.

Fading to white means the screen is not getting a video signal, but is still being told to stay lit, if this is the case, the inverter and backlight are fine. Does the video remain constant when your in safe mode? I noticed you didnt mention anything about it fading while you were running those utils in that mode. Also, if you hook up an external monitor, when the screen fades to white, what happens on the external?

Turns out something was wrong with a windows driver, I spent 2 1/2 hours on the phone with a guy from tech support at HP. I ended up having to do a complete reinstall of windows and lost quite a bit of stuff, not to happy about that buts its my fault for not backing my stuff up.

its unfortunate that you jumped to reformatting so fast. if it was indeed a simple driver problem, you could have easily backed up all of your important stuff via linux boot disk (such as damnsmall linux), and then reformatted or watever.

Well to get more detailed into the problem, I was going to just copy windows over the top of itself by the advice of the HP tech support, leaving all of my information and data intact. but we encountered a problem where it just started to loop, booting to the windows load screen then restarting itself. Forcing me into the situation of completely having to reinstall windows.

it sucks becuase I lost pictures, essays and god knows what else until the day I go to find it.
