I hope you got a good price on it. Because for your use you could build a machine a lot faster than a 7-year-old Xeon (so a Xeon version of a Core 2) with 2 GB or memory for not much, and would be a lot cheaper to work with when you encounter problems. And I do hope the video is all it is, but if you find other issues like with the 2 GB ECC DDR2 or the SAS drives, it may not be worth the investment for your purpose.

You can get some killer used server deals on eBay, though. Just a few weeks ago, I got a Poweredge T410 with 16 GB of memory, a quad core Xeon, and 4 TB of SAS RAID-5 storage for $300. Insane.... the storage alone is worth what I paid for it.

No kidding, that's awesome! I am hoping the OP's server was upgraded from the original specifications.

 Agree. There is nothing too magical about 1U rackmount servers when it comes to performance. They are roughly equivalent to a stacked desktop workstation from the same era, just in a more compact form factor of course.

Well i recived the pci-e video card its to big it turns out my server is x8 there is only one x16 which has a pci raiser but it doesn't fit there either because it has a big part sticking out the only place where it could work is on pci raiser but its x8 too. i heard on other fourms that u can break the end of the slot and it will still work. can i? and if i can how do i do it(what do i cut it with)

Does it not fit on the slot, or is it just too tall?

And if it's too tall, is the card too tall, or just the bracket?

You can indeed stick a x16 card into a x8 slot if you trim the plastic on the end of the slot. I wouldn't normally recommend it, but on a potentially-broken server from 2008, I don't see the harm in trying.

Have you tried resetting the bios?

It's possible you got a bad card.

It's also pissible the board has gone south.

With that configuration, it would be hard to tell which.

The only thing that points to the board (if you are certain the vga cable is good) is that it does seem ironic that the video on the board went out, and a discreet video card is not giving you a proper display.

Download the diagnostic pdf for your server model. It tells you which switch is for the reset.
