Screen won't turn on

Hello, I've had this problem before when it comes to some of my games like Sniper Elite 4 or Xcom 2 where the screen will shut off but then game and computer stay on. The screen says no signal and I can't do anything but restart the computer. I fixed that by changing some of the settings on the game which worked.

Now I had an issue where my anti-virus (Avira) was using 80% of my CPU and I didn't see a scan in progress so I restarted the computer and now the computer goes on but now screen. I've waited a few hours but nothing.

I opened the case and the fans on the GPU are not spinning, I switched the HDMI to the motherboard but that still won't work. You could think it was the monitor but I can turn it off and on and its checking for HDMI/DVI connnections and it finds nothing.

I don't really know what to do because I can't troubleshoot anything without worrying I'll blow something up. Anyone have any advice or thoughts? Thank you very much!

Fans aren't spinning, but, was it hot?
As for monitor, do you normally get a signal from your motherboard? Thought that had to be enabled before it gives out a signal.

Next time it happens, enable the onboard video, and see if monitor wakes up, if not, then sounds like a monitor issue. If so, then sounds like a video card issue.

So after about 9 hours of it not working, I turned it out and the fan is spinning and the computer is back.

What could be causing that issue if everything seems fine? Anything I can check this see? Tempature? BIOS? Event viewer?

Sounds like the video card is on it's way out. Screen going blank during gameplay is a tell-tale sign that this is going on as well, but the non-spinning fans would pretty much confirm it in my book. What brand is the 970? It may still be under warranty.
