On my windows machines, I have them set to run a screensaver after 5 minutes and to shut the monitor off after 20. Does windows stop running the screensaver program when it kills the monitor or does it continue to run with the monitor off?

No, just a regular screensaver. I'm juggling between RC5 and ECCp, but have been avoiding graphical screensavers because I'm afraid I'd be losing too many CPU cycles while the monitor is off.

Ah, so you are wondering if it is running and eating up cycles from your DC programs. I am not sure about that.

That's what I have been using up to now.

hmmm... is there any way to monitor CPU time for individual threads from another machine like top for windows? If I could check CPU use from another machine while this one is asleep, I could find out for sure...

If its an NT machine just use another machine to run "PERFMON" and add cpu usage selecting the other machine by net name i.e \\othermachinename

Great idea. CPU usage didn't help since it's always pinned at 100% but I was able to get the CPU time for the individual screensaver thread. Looks like it's still using about 15-20% of the CPU even while the monitor is off.
Good to know I guess...

Hmm, I've never heard of a blank screen screensaver. Are you sure that's the normal one? The filename doesn't sound right..ss3dfo.scr sounds more like an OpenGL screensaver. All the blank screen ones I've heard of are default.scr or blank.scr or something like that.

The ss3dfo.scr file that was running on the other machine was the "flying objects" openGL screensaver. I just wanted to run something that would take some CPU time to verify if the screensaver does indeed use CPU cycles while the monitor is off. Since it does, I'm going to stick with default.scr (just a black screen) beacuse CPU use is negligible.
