After all these years, I'm learning this for the first time. I've been using CMD-SHIFT-4 all this time for that.

Yosemite. CMD-SHIFT-4 spacebar has done window capture for as long as I can remember in OSX.
All this is correct. Just wanted to point out that you can do screencasts (record video and sound) using Quicktime Player as well.
