Screw GC, PS2, and X... Dreamcast!

With all the screaming and yelling about GC, PS2, and Xbox, people have forgotten their old buddy, the Dreamcast. With Dreamcasts having a thick game library each for under $15, and dipping into the sub $40 catagory for the unit itself, there really is no reason to buy a $200-300 console in my mind. Ive been playing others DC's for months, and I love its controller, feel, and graphics. The graphics, imho, even beat out alot of the next gen consoles (Sonic Adventure 2 has some absolutly stunning graphics at times). Hell, a friend of mine with both a DC and a PS2 only uses the PS2 for MGS2, GTA3 and GT3... but plays the DC literally non-stop. Add in the fact that most DC's can be fooled to play burned games with a simple boot disk and no $200+ soldering jobs and it gets even more attractive.

Long live Dreamcast... everybody be sure to get one while they are cold!

Concurred Dreamcast still rocks the house. There's not a better bargain out there right now.

Piracy was a major reason for the demise of the Dreamcast. It's awful hard to convince developers to drop several tens of millions in to a major title -- only to have it playing in everyone's DC (for free) before it even hits store shelves.

PS2 was the biggest disappointment of the year. An overpriced DVD player, which, really, isn't even good at that.

As for GC and X-Box ... No thanks. Neither has the online multiplayer gaming I enjoy in a console, neither has a 300+ title collection of top-quality titles, and neither has a kick-ass fishing controller

dreamcast rocks, my mate writes for www.gamestyle.net (uk console site) so hes got all the machines and games, i have to say the DC i easily like best, most kick ass games, most innovative games... but i cant really blame people for not wanting to buy sega after saturn - although for saturn owners, find RADIANT SILVERGUN (last i saw was going on ebay for £200...ouch! mate has 2 unopened boxes too!). Do not play this game if you have any plans for the day, you will play and play and play until the game is completed and you have to option to quit at any time, i swear its got some weird mind-control powers or something hehe.

PS2 has practically no good games, although Grand Theft Auto 3 is fantastic... but i can wait for PC version

like the look of Cube, but hey Nintendo can screw anything up, i mean have you heard the UK/EU release date?. Not sure about the controller either - N64 pad was perfect (except useless for beat em ups).... nothing worse than xbox pad though.

Sega Bass Fishing, ahh. When he got that, everybody laughed and said what a peice of crap. people were still saying that after 2 hours of absolute refusal to give up the rod-pad... utterly addictive good fun, but nobody willing to admit fishing games could be such fun

Heh, heh. What initially gravitated me to the Dreamcast was the juicy price. Now I found that I've spent about $500 on Dreamcast stuff in the last month. Hmm, $50 console becomes $500+ complete. Doh! Console, 3 controllers, 3 VMUs, 2 jump packs, VGA adapter, 22 (original) games. Oh well, had I bought a PS2/GC/X-Box, that all would have cost a bit over $1000...heck, you can't even get 20 games for GC/X-Box and there certainly aren't 20 good games for the PS2. Also, the Dreamcast's VGA/monitor out abilities are the best! I have many of the best titles for Dreamcast:

Armada
Crazy Taxi
Gauntlet Legends
Grandia II
Jet Grind Radio
Legend of Kain: Soul Reaver
Looney Tunes Space Race
NFL2K1
NBA2K1
Rayman 2
RE2: Code Veronica
Sega GT
Shenmue
Shenmue II
Skies of Arcadia
Soul Calibur
Space Channel 5
Test Drive: Le Mans
Tokyo Extreme Racer
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2
Virtua Tennis
WSB2K1

The only disappointment I have with my Dreamcast is that I haven't been able to duplicate the awe I felt when playing Super Mario 64 when I got my N64 on release day in Oct. 1996, nor have I gotten lumps in my throat like I have with Zelda: Ocarina of Time (though Shenmue has gotten close at times). I'll blame it on being jaded. Going from 2D (SNES, Genesis) to 3D (N64, PS1) was a very big deal at the time. Now that the virtual reality shock has been assimilated, it's harder to wow gamers to the same degree. But these feelings apply to the other 128-bit systems, too.

EDIT: typos.

LOL, ain't that the truth!

I could care less about IGN ratings. I've found several titles they've rated a 8, 9, or 10 which sucked arse. And, also, many which had poor ratings which I rather enjoy.

It's all about the games, not the hardware. And PS2, frankly, has neither.

Anyone that gives Madden games a great rating needs to be taken out back and shot. They're good games for football games, but they're neither innovative(what's the difference between 2001 and 2002 here besides better graphics?), nor nessisarily exciting.

"...Piracy was a major reason for the demise of the Dreamcast..."

Umm no.

By that logic, the Playstation should have been a colossal failure,

In fact, Playstation (not PSX2) sales are still going strong - both in terms of hardware & software.

And even though the piracy problem is much worse on the PSX than on the DC, Sony hasn't had much of a problem keeping developers onboard for PSX and PSX2.

The major reason for Dreamcast's demise, was Sega's own (mis-)management of that business unit. They were slow to attract developers, slow to advertise the console, slow to bring the price of the console within reach of Joe Gamer, and by the time they finally made progress in fixing these problems - the system already lost it's "new" appeal and people were looking towards PSX2.

The NGC and xbox have been out for less than a month, and you're complaining that they don't have a 300+ title collection? Well neither did the DC when it was less than a month old. You're trying to compare the library of two month old systems to a system that's almost a year old (I don't really remember, but I think it's less than a year old)?

I agree with you that the DC is (was [and will continue to be]) a great system, but I'm just trying to point out the flaw in that statement.

And uh, I'll just leave the fishing controller here and walk this way....

Yeah Dreamcast Rocks, I don't own one myself, but it was always the first I'd go to look at in the stores. And that's why I'm not buying one now.

Many of the games on the system that interest me ( 2K sports series, Sonic, Crazy Taxi) as well as a few that don't (Phantasy Star Online v.2)
are all coming to the Gamecube and other systems within the next 1/2-1 year. Though at $50 it really is hard to resist.

As for the list of PS2 games with 9.0's, how many of them are PS2 exclusive?

Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
Frequency
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies
Devil May Cry
Gran Turismo 3 A-spec
Grand Theft Auto III
ICO
Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil (Not sure about this one)
Silent Hill 2
Sky Odyssey
Twisted Metal: Black
And there's a pretty good chance that at least half of those end up on GC/XBOX/PC within a few months. The PS2's greatest advantage is that
it does have all those games on multiple platforms, as well as the few only PS2 has (if you're into FF), but it can also play PS1 games. It's biggest
advantage is it's library size, though at the moment I would still choose a DC over PS2

That because rating are subjective to the reviewer. Nothing can be rated accuratly, all is based mostly on opinion.

Yes but I'm not sure price was a problem. N64 cost $199 on release, PS1 cost $249, so the $199 opening day price for Dreamcast was quite normal. And now with PS2 and X-Box going for $299, GC's $199 price seems "cheap" and of course, DC's $49 is a steal.

Dreamcast rocks big time
I spend $150 for the console and about $100 for some extra DC-hardware
Games are all free so I have now about 300 games for $200 (about 66 cent each game) can you do this with ps2 or x-box or GC ?

I know N64 was 199 on release because that's what I paid at the mall (which would have the highest prices). I was told PS1 started off at 249.

i really think MGS2, GT3, Devil May Cry, and SSX tricky are all better than halo

halo was all hype

although it is a very good game i would not say it is even close to what people made it out to be which was the best game ever
i would give it an 8.5. Now if I could use a mouse and keyboard that score is bound to go up

the upcoming games of next year i really want to see are FFX/FFX1 , Virtua Fighter 4, Tekken 4, Soul Calibur 2

and most of all metroid prime that game will rock (i plan on getting a cube just for this game)

I agree.

I live in the UK so the GC and XBox are not an option for me unless I get an imported one. So that leaves just the PS2 and the DC to choose from. There just aren't any games that interest me on the PS2, whereas on the DC there are loads of "my type of games". Graphically, I think the two consoles are pretty even, perhaps each has certain advantages over the other but the PS2 certainly does not "spank" the DC in this department.

I am very happy with my DC and I have many excellent games!

Ah yes, my favourite console to date the dreamcast. Unfortunately I've been running low on cash of late so I'm missing out on some games so I'm waiting for them to show up used. That said I still have some classics, Sword Of the Berserk anyone? Try finding that sucker.
For me, the DC has been all about the games. And there is nothing wrong with the graphics considering how old the console is. And the innovation of Sega's titles is just awe inspiring. Almost every game that comes out of Sega is golden.
