I picked up the 52X today at OM. All of their stock were Lite Ons. They 115% price matched to Office Depot so I saved about 5 more bucks. Office Depot Print and present when you purchase.
From the forum at ChubbyWallet.com:
Lite On: Drive Model #LTR52246S, Serial # has 12 numbers
BenQ: Drive Model #5224P or 5224W; Serial # has 24 digits, numbers and letters
Asus: Drive Model #5224A, Serial # has 10 digits, numbers and letters

Drive Model # and Serial # are located on the back of the box at the lower right hand corner of the label.

Cendyne boxes have a brown box inside the colored band that covers 3 sides with a security seal on the brown box. I would ask to have it opened before I would buy. If you want a Lite-on there is a $15.00 deal at BB for a 52x. Search forum for details.
just a rebuttal, I've been using a 40X Lite-On, for a while now. recently got a BenQ 48X drive. It does its job just fine.

I've had 2 BenQ drives (Hi-Val, Cendyne), 4816 and a 4824. Both works great and are quiet, solid feeling drives.

PC World listed BenQ among their top 10 burners. Plexi's still the best.
PC World is a mag for retired and retarded, they are way behind on everything. Read anand, tomshardware, cdrlabs, cdrfreaks and similar to learn what is hot and what is not.

Thank you, MadScientist, for the concise and extremely informative post.

If you do audio CD burning at all, go for the LiteOn. It has much better digital audio extraction (DAE) than the other two, which means better audio copies, less chance of skips, pops and other defects.

I got this and just tried burning a cd while copying a 1.6 gig file so both using the hard drive. I tried burning using both 52x and 48x... the result is 2 dead cdrs. Does LiteOn drives have any buffer underrun protection? I used to have a TDK 12x10x32x burner and I would be able todo this perfectly with it's buffer underrun protection (forgot what it's called, but I think it's the same as the Plextors). Thus far i'm not impressed... I'd rather wait 2 more minutes for my TDK to finish and not have to worry about dead cdrs than to burn in 4 minutes and have to not use my computer at all!

Copying a 1.6GB file will cause buffer underrun on almost any CDR. If not that, then it will add deadspace and potentially cause a bad CD. IDE was not made for simultaneous reads/writes.

Of course there are exceptions, but what is now knows as "buffer underrun protection" won't stop a massive system event like that.

I almost missed this and I wanted to post it so you guys are aware of it. In order to be eligible for the CenDyne (not OfficeMax) rebate, according to the "Terms and Conditions":

5. You must register your product either online at www.cendyne.com or mail in the registration form that was included in the box.

I don't think this is the first time they've done this from what I've seen in past deals. Nevertheless, it's BS and I'm sure it will invalidate a lot of rebates.

I went to OMax today to grab one of these for my dad. I told him there was a possibility of getting a Lite-On and also the possibility of not. He told me to get it anyway. Turned out it was an Asus. He doesn't really care, either way.
