nothin' tops bubonic
Just saw on DHC the other night that pneumonic plague is the one spread by incidental contact.
With Bubonic you need to be bitten by a carrier or fleas.
If you've ever been to Custer State park in South Dakota there's a prairie dog community that's infested with bubonic plague.

I remember reading something a couple of years ago about a strain of bubonic plague that the Soviets had developed that was extra, EXTRA deadly and could be weaponized. Hope to helll none of that stuff falls into the wrong hands.

Time to settle some nerves...

Risk: Wild rodents in certain areas around the world are infected with plague. Outbreaks in people still occur in rural communities or in cities. They are usually associated with infected rats and rat fleas that live in the home. In the United States, the last urban plague epidemic occurred in Los Angeles in 1924-25. Since then, human plague in the United States has occurred as mostly scattered cases in rural areas (an average of 10 to 15 persons each year). Globally, the World Health Organization reports 1,000 to 3,000 cases of plague every year. In North America, plague is found in certain animals and their fleas from the Pacific Coast to the Great Plains, and from southwestern Canada to Mexico. Most human cases in the United States occur in two regions: 1) northern New Mexico, northern Arizona, and southern Colorado; and 2) California, southern Oregon, and far western Nevada. Plague also exists in Africa, Asia, and South America (see map).

Plague schmague. I wanna see some ebola or marburg hit the states. 50-80% population reduction in a month.

Yes, I'm j/k...but it could happen!

Plague kills around 10 or 20 people per year in the western US. It isn't something you should get worked up over. It is treatable with Tetracycline, which is a very common and very cheap antibiotic.

Bubonic plague and park closings and warnings go back for years. Hunta virus is also on the loose in Ca.

If it hits Berkeley the University will find a cure. Berkeley eats it like the US eats it in the world. Everybody's jealous of the best. Oh and Berkeley's where you'll be in 50 years. Of course by then Berkeley will be 60 or 70 years ahead and you will be raving about how perfect life is where your are in your vintage 2002 Berkeley time capsule.

Somewhere in norcal i hope

Its where boreal ski resort is....i guess somewhere on the way to tahao rite?

Yes, Truckee is by Tahoe...I'm not sure how close it is to Boreal..I think about an hour away though. But I live like an hour away from Truckee in the other direction. But I'm not worried...this isn't new. I've been going camping at Tahoe each year for like 5 years now and at the campgrounds there are signs that say squirrels may contain certain diseases, one of which is the plague. So it's nothing new and most likely nothing to be worried about
