Oh, come ON now! That means that the season 1 DVDs are coming out a scant 3 years after the last episode aired originally.
What about Northern Exposure (series 1: aired in summer of 1990, finally available on DVD in 2004 (and no, it wasn't available on VHS before that either, except for like 5 of the shows)) -- that's 14 years!
or even NewsRadio (series 1: aired in 1995/1996, finally availble on DVD in 12 days!!!!!) -- that's about 9 years.

But to get (sorta) back on topic about DVDs for sale:
Actually, the NewsRadio DVD set contains the complete 1st and 2nd series, and it's available for $27.97 with free S/H from Amazon.

Holy cow, I had no idea they take so dang long to come out. Something I wish they did, I mean I wish all TV channels, networks, whatever... I wish they would put their shows online so people could buy them individually if they wanted. A good example of when this would have come in handy, I don't get the history channel but my history class suggested I read this thing on "Kingdom of Heaven" for a paper I had to write about it. I would have gladly paid upwards of $10 to see just that one show....well, if the commercials were taken out of course but you get my point, every show that ever airs should be available online... and I don't mean on some stupid "ondemand" crap on the TV.... I guess maybe I'm a minority because I don't watch TV and find it easier to download shows. (newsgroups of course, which everything known to man isn't posted there, unfortunately.)

Well, Northern Exposure in particular supposedly had some big hurdles with the licensing of the songs they had used in the episodes -- the original contracts didn't include anything about rights to release them on DVDs, which is one reason why it took so long. Nowadays the contracts include the possibility of coming out on DVD so there aren't really any big hurdles, so they actually can (and do) come out much sooner.

I think you've got a great idea there about having all shows available for download. And I'm sure there wouldn't be too many technical hurdles. Probably the two main problems would be that the RIAA would never let it happen without a "do not copy" flag on it, and figuring out the licensing/residuals for each.
Of course, it would only be available to people with broadband. You could have kiosks at every Target or in malls, where you could browse the available shows/movies and have it download and burn a DVD right there for $10 for the first show and $5 for each additional show that would fit on the DVD. And for $5 more, It could even use Lightscribe to burn a professional-looking 'label' on the disc.
Maybe you should write up a business case and see if you can get funding for your new business.
