I think the choice is between:
 • Seagate Cheetah 36XL, 9.2 GB, Ultra160 Wide LVD SCSI-3, 10,00
 • Quantum Atlas 10K "Typhoon", 9.2 GB, Ultra160 Wide LVD SCSI-3, 10,000 RPM, 4.7 ms seek, 8 MB cache, A/V Rated, 3.5" LP, 68 pin interface
 • IBM Ultrastar "Discovery" 36LZX, 9.1 GB, Ultra160 Wide LVD SCSI-3, 10,000 RPM, 4.9 ms seek, 4 MB cache, A/V Rated, 3.5" LP, 68 pin interface

So this would go along with a Tekram DC390U3W Ultra160 SCSI. Would I need any other connection, adaptor, or anything else, or is everything included?

I am going to use this card with a Toshiba DVD ROM and a Burner, don't have one yet... I need to buy the HDD and the Burner...

HDD < $250

help me...

I like the performance of my IBM Ultrastar "Discovery" 36LZX, 9.1 GB, Ultra160 Wide LVD SCSI-3, 10,000 RPM, 4.9 ms seek, 4 MB cache drive. Don't bother with the Quantum Atlas 10k drive if you are going to get a Quantum drive get an Atlas 10k II drive.

I got an Atlas 10K 2, not much of a difference from my old 7200 IDE drive. But maybe my cpu is the limit. Athlon 650.

Seems to me that you would recomand the Atlas 10K II of course, or the Seagate. So I wanna cancel the IBM out...

Any more experiences? It is time for me to get into SCSI... HURAY...

Go 10kII's, I have a couple, not too loud. Runs much quieter cooler than the old 10k's. Dunno how they match up against the Cheetahs though. Benchmarks seem similar. Quantums might be cheaper now... there's a $25 dollar rebate for 9 giggers I think ($50 for 18's).

Another vote for the Atlas 10k or 10k II. I have a 10k, and have heard people complain that they are loud, but mine is quieter than the hard drive in this lab computer I'm on right now, with an old 5400 RPM IDE drive in it. The only thing loud about the 10k are read/write intensive applications with lots of seeks, such as defragmenting (Win2k's diskkeeper is worse), and even then it's not unbearably loud. But the 10k is aging, so you might as well go for the 10k II if it's affordable.

check out the Cheetah 18XL seeks is rated faster than the 36XL and its cheaper. I have one and its quieter than all my IBM drives. Its also cool and needs no extra cooling.

don't know for sure, but I think you need to get terminators for your cables (just in case you're a SCSI newbie).. Though I personally don't have experience with SCSI, I do know that terminators are sometimes (if not all the time) used.

I have IBM 36LZX 18.3Gb hard drive on Adaptec 29160 and so far I'm very happy with its performance, reliability and low noise level. I also have couple Seagate Cheetahs and Quantum Atlases at work, and while all of of these drives perform about the same, IBM seems to be the quitest from all of them and doesn't get so hot compare to others.

Hi can you help me on this site? firesale.com
Search for QM309200TY and you will see some things I am not really aware of.

Condition: Repackaged (I know about that, wouldn't get this one)
Condition: Resealed OEM
Condition: Factory Recertified / Refurbished
Condition: Factory Sealed

What is that about? Any help?

and now something technical, is the only difference between the QM309200TY-LW and the QM309200TY-SCA the pinns? what is the difference? Which one to get?

You want the LW. SCA is an 80 pin interface used mostly for its hot-swap capability.

gotta buy separate adapters at ~$20 each
they're ugly and most i've seen are poorly made
takes up more space in yer case
use of an adapter results in less secure wiring
drives w/ adapter might not offer true u160 interface
