hmm....IDE, think of it as one way rail road.
SCSI as two way rail road, where you don't have to wait for incoming train to reach the station before outgoing train to start.

ok so if i was to go with scsi i would need all scsi compatible drives... correct?... and about how much more would that cost?

Yeah, you would need all scsi and that would cost quite a bit more. But the performance (for a LOT of things, but not necessarily all) will be worth it.

i'd say it depends on what you're doing. if you're just goofing around and doing homework and stuff, it's not necessary. imho, it's not worth the money. but if you're running a server or some high end stuff like that then go for it.

IDE is a more cost-effective solution, which provides lower data transfer rates, higher seek times, and supports 2 devices per controller versus 7 with scsi. Most motherboards nowadays have 2 ide controllers for a max of 4 ide devices. SCSI also has a far lower cpu utilization than IDE does. Unlike IDE, SCSI doesn't slow to a crawl when performing multiple simultaneous data transfers over a given controller. The down-side of SCSI is the cost, as well as heat and/or noise in some cases. Bottom line, if you've got the money go with SCSI, and if not go with IDE.

You could use some IDE and some SCSI.

Not familiar with the board, but you'd generally wanna get a SCSI controller card for a SCSI setup. A card with cache(preferrably int he form of DIMMs) would be preferrable. The more cache the better, but each doubling of cache has half as much effect on performance as the previous doubling.

Example:
16mb cache +20% performance
32mb cache +30% performance
64mb cache +35% performance
128mb cache +37.5% performance

Anyone happen to know of an IDE controller card that performs a significant amount of the calculations on-board off-loading them fromt eh cpu and thus having SCSI-like CPU utilization?

The cpu utilization is the main reason that I wish I had a SCSI setup.

sounds like one of the old caching controller cards...I had one that would format a 6gb hard drive in 15 seconds. Why did everyone quit making/supporting them?
