What kind of troubleshooting could I do for an SCSI HD that I placed externally in a 2bay case? I've attached the all of my SCSI devices(1 HD, 2 internal CD-Rom), but I can't seem to detect my Seagate SCSI HD. I've checked the ID settings, and all is terminated. I'm think maybe I got the connectors on the back of the external bay is wrong, is there a specific way to connect them? Cable on the bottom, and terminator on top? vice versa or does it matter? Also, during boot up, the SCSI adapter is suppose to detect the HD even if the HD isn't formatted, right? And Fdisk is suppose to see it too right?

Thanks,

Hmm what kind of SCSI is it?

Ultra Wide?? I would try disconnecting the CD-ROMs and just try to get the HDD working.

It might be turning off the external bus when using the internal one.

That's just a hunch... also what's the adapter?? Adaptec 2940U/UW??

I've checked the ID settings, and all is terminated
Do you mean you terminated every drive???? If you did, you can't do that.

Rules of SCSI

-First and last device should be terminated (according to spec, this isn't always the case, Sometimes the last device shouldn't be terminated in order to make it work. This is sometimes the case when there is only one device connected to the bus.)

-The First Device is usually your controller. Depending on the card, termination is either set on the card with a jumper or in the bios of the SCSI Card.

-Each Device has to have a different ID

First thing I would try is disconnecting all devices except the HD. The HD should show up in the bios of the SCSI card. If it works add the other devices back in one at a time to see which device causes a conflict.

Close Schmoe, but I got an Adaptec 2930U. The huge honken refurbished Seagate 9.1GB HD is hooked up externally w/ a SCSI-2 interface. I guess it could be a dud when I bought it off Flea-bay. No problems with the CD-Rom, or the CDRW being hooked up internally w/ CDRW being terminated. I just don't have 2 extra 5.25 bays on my case to fit the HD.
The adaptec card has the small HD50 pin external connector which I have a HD50Mto50MCentronics adapter, and that's hooks up w/ the 3ft Centronics cable. That cable is then hooked up with one of The Huge External Bay's connector which was an old Banyan tape drive that i swapped with the HD in it's place. The other connector on the back of the bay has the Centronics terminator attached. Does it matter what order on the back of external SCSI bays(Terminator on top or vice versa)?
device SCSI ID#
9.1 HD 0
24XCD-Rom 2
CDRW 4

I'll try unhooking everything, and just test the HD internally to see if it is a dud or not then. But, will my setup work this way as describe above??

Try a different ID for the hard drive. Most newer controllers will terminate automatically in the SCSI BIOS.

Does the SCSI Bios need an ID as well? So if that's the case and the BIOS automatically configures itself as 0 then I have conflict w/ the HD drive then, right?
