Can try diff setting & use HD Tach to see if they make any perf diffs.

I disable SCSI bus scan for all IDs except ones I'm using - saves a few secs during boot-up, but u have to remember to re-enable when adding devices.

Flash BIOS to latest .. latest drivers .. latest firmware for the drive.

With that set-up, you shouldn't need much tweakage.

Do you have any other scsi stuff on there besides the hdd? I've read that if you only have that you can disable "disconnect" and its supposed to help. Not sure of how much though.

Do not disable Disconnect - You need it to disconnect otherwise the device will hog the SCSI bus and other SCSI devices will not have a chance to get data.

Maybe I should have said if you only have a single hdd on the controller. That is what I meant to say anyway. Only use disable disconnect if you have NO OTHER SCSI DEVICES as Lore has stated

Ok well the 39160 card is a dual channel card The HD is all alone on its own channel
On the other channel I have a PLextor40 Max and a Yamaha BurnerI tried HDtach and got readins as low as 5.7 and as high as 7ms Still seems kinda slow Does NTFS slow it down at all?

Yes you can update firmware on seagate drives because I had to do it once before with this drive However the firmware and the software to update it was sent to me by tech support

Anyhow I was just comparing benchamrks on my drive with Sisoft Sandra and HDtach to a set of IDE drives using raid and my #s look absolutely pathetic

You can update the firmware of almost anything, but hard drive manufacturers rarely if ever post them on their website for you to use. The only time you might get one is if there is a problem with your drive and tech support decides to send you one, as happened with you. I have never seen a hard drive maker post a performance enhancing firmware, though updated versions of a drive may have one.

I scored 25000 on sandra drive benchmark with my 19160 and ibm u160 10k drive. It was a lot higher than the u66 ide numbers on there. The ide raid setup may be faster on sustained throughputs but it will never touch the access times of that scsi drive.

Seek time is 4.9, access time is around 8. Your RAID setup should be faster Viper, 23MB/s is barely above what one KA+ should get.
