I got a Dell rack server with a 29160 installed in it. I have an external dlt tape drive. The SCSI bios isn't detecting it (worked fine internally). I'm assuming i gotta mess with jumpers.

For the time being though, I'm running windows SBS 2003 and i'm wondering if it's ok to hot swap the drive in windows, and if it will detect it once i got it setup right? i can't go rebooting the server each time to see if i have the right setting.. i also dont wanan crash the machine trying to get it detected either..

any input?

Do you have the drive's owner's manual? I bet you'll find your answers in there.

jumpers seem okay, unit is powered upand connected, adaptec still sees nothing attached, i have a rescan utility from microsoft to rescan the bus without rebooting, tried a couple things with no luck..

i dont recall a 29160 requirign you to do anything to see external drives.. i'm lost at what to do next =\

Do you have it set to terminite internally ? I think you need to turn that off, and make sure the drive is terminated.

Also, the cable type and length may be important. After fighting mine for quite some time (works one day, not another) I just mounted it internally, and I leave it unplugged unless I am using it (pugging in while turned off of course) since it creates so much heat and noise.

Mark FW900 is correct. Your problem is that the device is not terminated correctly. Each end of a SCSI chain must be properly terminated. Make sure that the external chain is not terminated in the SCSI BIOS, and then get a good hardware terminator for the external drive cable, or set the termination properly on the drive itself. The drive will not show up in Windows if it is not recognized by the 29160.

well, theres no jumper for termination, the external enclosure has 2 connections on the back, one is terminated, internally they lead to the same ribbon which is connected.. no luck.. it's very stupid. pissing me off
