scsi is for better multitasking

its the seek times of the 15k drives that make them fast, yes the transfer rates are higher, but it is the seek time that really counts.

you will feel a difference between 10k and 15k, as you will for 7.2k to 10k

The ultrawide drives are not CDRW's. The only ultrawide drive Plextor made was a 40x CDROM drive.

Once again look for a 80pin---68pin converter

Why does 80pin exist then?

It is designed to have the whole data/power connecter together as to simply in removeable-bay use.

You can buy removeable drive bays (servers usually have them standard) that allow for swap or hot-swap usability....

Also..most consumer=prices converters are pretty bad...they are either electronically faulty or jsut fall off.

Even so there RE good consumer adapters out there...just shop around...I would try hypermicro.com for all your scsi needs....I bought my stuff there quite a while ago and was VERY pleased

actually plextor last year had plans for a 68 pin burner (the only one to my knowledge)and a ram drive...but it was only on their site for a month or so and was never
released. the 68 pin ultrawides are just readers, the 50 pin scsi is an 8x burner that has never given me a bad disk...
i also love their cd resq (dos) program.. i can restore a disk after a low level format in just minutes...os and all
this prog is not yet compatible w/ xp yet
that plextor reader was rated as having the fastest data transfers around. your tekram card has two channels and can handle it.
i think you will like the tekram card.
tekram at one time did oem work for intel .

thanks everyone...
here are a few more...i am noob...
how much would those hot-swap drivebays about?
does "hot-swap" mean that you can physically unplug the drive and plug into another scsi system without much hassle?
for bobby: does the tekram retail kit come with any 80-68pin convertors?

Actually Plextor also made a 32X wide CDROM, I have one here. Most I have seen are OEM.

yes terminators and all..and much more overclocking freindly (from my experience) than the adaptec cards
the hot swap trays can really turn this into an expensive project.
the only thing you can hot swap w/ the standard trays are storage drives.. if you pull out your boot drive, you will lose your mbr
and have probs..been there done that
what is your op sys of choice?

i c...you will loose you main boot records if you pull out the boot drive...
yeah i don't think i will be needing the hot-swap anyway
my os choice right now would be winxp pro(my current o/s), but i can go win2kpro with dual boot if i needed...what do you think? I might be able to put in win98se also. I will probably be sticking to microsoft b/c i haven't mess with other o/s like linux yet

win xp pro sniffs the tekams cards (u2w=tekram chip,u3w=lsi logic chip) right out.....
w/ win 2kpro has a little trick,
win 98... you need to edit auto exec, bat files in the boot disk to sniff out the cd rom.. assuming you go 100% scsi
the good thing about adaptec though are the dos drivers, but i think tekram is a faster card
i purchased the latest linux, and it is still on my shelf...tekram has full linux support
