Scumware...Martfinder hijack (no internet connection)

Alright so my cousin has lent me his laptop to fix his "viruses". I have fixed many computers in the past but none this bad. He had no windows updates EVER (1+ years old) and no security installed either. I have done my best installing the SP2 update and Zonealarm firewall and Avast AV. I also ran Spybot S+D and Ad-aware scans cleaning MANY items out. It looks to be "clean" now except Spybot keeps showing up 5 possible hijacker attempts that keep reappearing after fixing. All 5 are registry changes that are related to internet explorer. There is no internet connection on it either (including using Netscape) which seems to be from a virus. The webpage is locked onto http://www.martfinder.com/index.htm. I have looked at Hijackthis scan logs but dont see anything suspicious. I will put the log below also as some of you may be able to see something. I would love to have his computer fixed by this weekend. Any help is appreciated.

Ouch. Sounds like the CoolWebSearch (I think it was called) that created NTFS alternate streams and thoroughly hid itself. I think that's what it's called. Anyone got the name? Anyway, I was trying to fix my dad's PC which had the same thing, nothing in HijackThis that looked suspicious yet IE couldn't go to the right home page. Finally I managed to remove it, but it took at least 3 hours (I'd call myself extremely experienced being a programmer). If that's what I think it is, it's going to be hell to remove. There's a big guide on removing that spyware that helped me a little bit.

I would suggest

1) back up any important data

2) reimage the laptop from its original Recovery CDs or DVD

3) get it properly secured this time, including SP2, Automatic Updates, high-end antivirus software, Windows Firewall, a Limited account for increased-risk activities like IM and browsing

4) user education regarding "all that glitters is not gold"

If I recall properly, those 5 registry things related to IE are due to some relatively benign bug in Spybot. I don't see any odd processes running.

And as someone said, could be CWS. CWShredder can get rid of most variants of it.

Lastly, if removing spyware renders the Internet unusable - no connection, then it might be due to damage to the TCP/IP stack. LSPfix can repair that.


Now then, if you do just do a reinstall, do fully update it from Windowsupdate, and try to get this person acclimated to Firefox. Good bunch of extensions to use.
It is, at least for now, far more resistant to background spyware autoinstallations.
Ya know what other extension would be handy - something that could output a UBB formatted listing of all your Firefox extensions, along with links to each extension's site. The thing would need to be coded to allow you to pick url= or link=, whichever a site uses. Alas, I suck at programming.


From the HijackThis log, what is C:\Program Files\Acceleration Software\StopSignProducts\Firewall\fwservice.exe? That sounds odd to me. "Acceleration software" has a tendancy to carry unpleasant payloads.
