I got a scanner with an isa scuzzi card, since I got a new computer with only pci slots what can I do.
Can I buy a card anywhere?
I love my scanner which does legal size documents and I never see those anymore.
It is a umax astra 1200s and the computer is a Dell 9100.
Thanks for any help

What card do you have now (so I can determine the connector type)? Yes you can buy SCSI cards for PCI slots

It was the proprietary card that came with the scanner.
I did a google search and found where someone says a Adaptec 2906 can be used.
It has 25 pin DB25 connector for the cable.

Does this sound about right?
Thanks for the help.

Hey,

Check my FS thread, I have a PCI Adaptec 2904 that will work just fine. I also have an HD50-Centronics external cable I'll throw in for you.

The 2906 will work just fine, I did the same thing with a SCSI scanner that I had. Dumped the ISA card and used the 2906. The 2906 doesn't have a boot ROM though so if you attach a harddrive or an optical drive (highly unlikely in these days of IDE), you cannot boot of it.

The nice thing about the 2906 compared to the 2904 is that the external connector of the 2906 is 25 pin. I used, I think, regular serial port cables ( the one used for external modems) to attach to my scanner (also 25 pin). the 2904 has a 50 pin connector so you have to use an adapter cable ( 50 pin to 25 pin SCI) which may be more expensive than the card itself.

Thanks guys for the help.
Is that the cable Daemon is talking about?
If so I might go that route

Depends on what your scanner connection is. If it's a 50-pin Centronics, I can help you out. If it's something else, then I don't have the cable. The port on the 2904 is HD50.

If you do need a cable, try www.cablesforless.com. Local stores tend to charge a HUGE markup for these things.

a centronics connector looks like the printer end of a parallel port printer cable. BUT you cannot use a printer cable as it is a 36 pin connector where a scsi centronics connector is 50 pins.

Yeah, 25pin D connector is the old Apple connector. Just in case, there are tons of good and cheap PCI SCSI cards on eBay and here in the FS/T section too. If you can find a Tekram, they are very good. You will almost always have to get an adaptor or adaptor cable to work with the external connector of most cards as that will almost always be a 50 pin HD connector. Adaptors and adaptor cables are also available on eBay cheap.

Might be cheaper to just go ahead and get a USB scanner for all the hassle you'll have collecting stuff to run with that SCSI Umax - if you were going to be running a bunch of SCSI besides the scanner, my advice would be different. USB scanners also cheap on eBay - often under $50 shipped for NIB units.

I don't believe there's such a thing as a 25-pin Centronics. There's 36-pin, which is a printer, and 50-pin, which is SCSI. There's a ridge in the centre and the pins are in pairs on each side.

Does it look like this cable would fit? That's the Centronics end of my HD50-Centronics 50 cable.

Sorry for the image quality - no macro function.

It is a centronic cable.
Says so on the label No L-572963 and it is 25 pin.
I would buy another but I cannot seem to find one that is 8.5x14 locally.
I did not realize this would be so much trouble.
Won't the Adaptec 2906 work with this cable?
Maybe I will have to look online for a new scanner.
Would like to get one to scan negatives anyway.
Thanks again guys.

I had an old SCSI Umax scanner that someone gave to me. The drivers never quite worked right under windows xp. It gave me nothing but problems and I ended up throwing it away.

Of the commonly available brands, Microtek is the one that has some reasonably priced 8.5 x 14" scanners. I see one on eBay - claims it is new/unused and legal size at $25 Buy It Now.
. But shipping will probably choke you unless you are near Yakima, WA.
. Someone on eBay also has a Microtek 5950 which has an automatic document feeder. The neat thing about that is that it is a letter size scanner that can also do legal size if you use the sheet feeder due to the accurate positioning. Starting bid $25. It's closer too - Minnesota.
