Scythe Infinity a good choice for the E6600?

Reason you haven't heard much of the infinity yet is because it is so new. Not many placed have done reviews and not many people have purchased yet... give it a few weeks and you should know more. If you have to purchase now, well, it looks like a good cooler, but it weighs a ton. You are really in the use at your own risk since it weighs 960g and Intel's specs for max heatsink/fan weight are 450g, which means the Infinity is more then 2x the MAX weight!!!

I wonder if there's a way to reenforce the socket or consruct some kind of harness to take the weight off the mobo. That's some SERIOUS weight there!

One other thing to think about... I saw an Xbit labs review of the Scythe Mine vs Big Typhoon and they had a whole section about how HS fans that blow perpendicularly to the mobo cooled all the system components much better than these tower-type HS units which blow all their air sideways. They concluded that for a stable OC, you're better off perpendicular.

Wish I saw that before ordering my parts. I'm sitting here with a big fat Scythe Mine (should have at least got a ninja -- not enough research...) waiting for my E6600 to come Friday (YAY). Might try to find a way to get another fan to blow across the whole mobo.

The weight shouldn't be a problem at all unless you move your case around a lot. If you're worried about it, you could always get sturdy wires from a hardware store to have it held do the top of the case.

i always thought it was best to have the fan on top of the HS and blowing air down.... not from the side anyone care to comment?

I have noticed this as well. I have the zalman CNPS9500 and while it does a pretty good job at cooling my OC'd CPU the RAM and mosfets all run warmer. Partially due to the OC for the mosfets I'm sure, but the RAM isn't OC'd at all. Well, 8MHz worth but o goody, this RAM won't OC worth crap :frown: but then I didn't spend much on it, ran out of money

OP, if you go HERE and HERE there are two people who got the infinity and there is some discussion about it. Hope that is helpful in some way

Or you could do like me and try to rig up a 1-2 more fans in the case to blow across/down on the mobo components....

Once all my parts get here on Tuesday (darn labor day...), I'll try doing some heat tests of my own. Scythe Mine alone, then try to mount some mobo-blowing fans somewhere...Not all that scientific, to be sure, as I don't have a thermo-measuring-doohickey, so I'll be stuck using Mobo CPU temp, mobo temp, and the trusty old finger test.

I would like a good airflow for the northbridge and RAM especially.

I think i'm going to buy it given that it's at least better than Scythe Mine I have now. Don't know if it's better than Ninja tho.
