Scythe Infinity Thoughts

I'm putting together a Q6600 system.

I'm using the ASUS P5K-E LGA 775 Intel P35 Link and the Antec P182 Gun Metal Black Case Link.

I have seen good reviews about the Scythe Infinity Link in regards to cooling and quietness. I know it's really big and that's fine as long as doesn't cause a problem with my motherboard (I've already seen lots of people with the Antec P182 case and it looks like it fits fine). Based on the motherboard pictures it looks like I should have plenty of clearance but I wondered if someone had experience with this motherboard and the Scythe Infinity to verify.

Also, my biggest concern is with the weight of this cooler. It's listed at 960g. Since it will be mounted at the standard 90 degree angle in the P182 I'm concerned that it will cause my motherboard to bow and possibly break. Has anyone done anything about this or has this caused a problem with anyone else?

Btw, I have noticed that Scythe has a "Universal Retention Kit". They have a "Buy Now" feature on their website but all the websites that they recommend getting it from (including NewEgg-my preferred site) do not have it. Do you know of any other places that might have it or can you recommend another "Universal Retention Kit" that would work.

svc.com is best for HSF's IMO, but that saud, I would get the Thertake Ultra 120 or the extreme variant.

I know that the Thermaltake Ultra 120 currently offers the very best cooling. I'm not looking for the best. Just very good. My most important concern for a CPU cooler is quietness because the computer will be in my room close to my bed. Second is thermal cooling since I might overclock my Q6600 to 3.0Ghz.

I have a Scythe Infinity. Works well - it may not be the absolute best, but it's very quiet and does a very good job. I accidentally left the fan unplugged on my Scythe Infinity for a couple of weeks on my Core 2 Duo E6700 CPU and everything worked fine with the fan off and I didn't even notice because it makes so little noise.

If you want good cooling on a tighter budget, look up the Xigmatek HDT-1283.

PS, this should be in Cases and Cooling

Try looking at the Thermalright Ultima-90i (or extreme?).It accepts either 90mm or 120mm fans and it may be a little lighter than the Scythe. Also the 90/120mm option allows you to fit the smaller fan if (like me) you can't fit the case cover with the 120mm installed

Yes, like Germonicus said, get a Thermalright Ultima 90 with one or two low rpm 120 mm fans, and you will have a cheap, effective and silent cooling solution.

I don't think you can mount more than one 120mm fan on an ultima 90, nor do you really need to. The point of diminishing return on that cooler is right around 60cfm which any decent mid-rpm 120mm fan can do.

I second that. The Xigmatek scored as good as the Thermalright Ultra 120 @ Frostytech.com.
Not that the Scythe SCINF-1000 is a bad cooler, they perform around the same, its just @ low speeds the Xigmatek seems to run a tad more silent and weighs 360g less.

And as and added bonus, the Xigmatek comes with a 4-pin PWM fan that can run up to 1500 RPM if needed.

Anyone know the difference in cooling between the 40$ HDT-RS1283 and the 27$ HDT-S1283. I notice the RS1283 (Red Scorpion model) has Nickel Heat-pipes where as the S1283 has copper pipes.

You can mount two 120 mm fans on the Ultima, but like you've said, maybe the drop in temperature is not worth the extra noise. It was just a thought.

The Scythe Infinity is an excellent cooler. I wouldn't be concerned over the weight as long as you're not transporting the PC too much.

The Xigmatek is also getting rave reviews. (ie same performance as TRUE but cheaper, better quality and it includes a fan. TRUE has had quality control problems with the base and mount.) Also consider the Kingwin verson of the Xigametek. (same cooler just a different name).

Based on the replies it looks like everyone is pretty pleased with the Xigmatek S1283 cooler. It looks solid so I'll go with that.

Thanks everyone!

Pretty sure the only tangible difference is the bling factor

And the fan. The nickel is actually good for longevity as well, especiallly in more humid climates and very especially in salty and humid climates near the ocean.
