In your experience, can you notice a significant difference between plain SD cards and ones that are marked as "high speed"?

I just purchased a 133X OCZ SD card to replace my current Kingston card which is thought be to 10X. Is that a waste of money?

Also, does anybody know if there's a bigger, more noticeable difference with higher speed cards on different devices, e.g.; a phone with MP3 capability vs. an actual MP3 player vs. a digi camera?

Yes the device needs to be able to write fast enough too to be able to take advantage of the card. I have a really nice digital camera and it can only write at about 70 x's or something like that. But I have a 133 x card in there. Phones will no doubt be much slower.

From what I have just read, digital video recorders need a fairly fast card.

It would make a difference in say, a Camera which can Record Video Clips
in addition to regular Digital photos ... otherwise, it should not make a difference

And as Steve said in a DVR you would want it

http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/GrammatonJP/SD-AData4GB.jpg - Adata 4gb 150x
http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/GrammatonJP/SD-Kingston2GB.jpg - Kingston 2gb 133x
http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/GrammatonJP/SD-PNY1GB.jpg - PNY 1gb unknown speed..

I originally got the 1gb for my sd550, i couldn't take continuous picture, after 4 pics, it pauses with write message... after upgrading to kingston 2gb, it was unlimited, no pausing at all..

I got the 4gb because I got my wife a sd400 and gave her the 2gb, the adata was available for 75 after rebate.. so i upgraded mine..

Aren't those 4GB cards only compatible with certain cameras? I thought I read something about that. Something about the original SD spec only going to 1 or 2GB (sounds like a formatting issue)

Personally, at the moment I shoot with 1GB cards (CF on a rebel XT) - even with the price of bigger cards dropping. I just don't like the idea of having all my eggs in one basket, as the saying goes.

IIRC, each "x" in speed is supposed to represent 150KB/sec of write performance. So a 4x card is supposed to be able to write at 600KB/sec and a 80x card is supposed to write at 12MB/sec. I believe Lexar came up with this method a determining the performance of compact flash cards and this has since been applied to SD and other media. Of course many companies now use the "x" scale to represent the faster read speeds.

I have an Aiptek MPVR camera / "camcorder", which records at 640 x 480 @ 30 fps.

Would a standard Kingston SD card with a maximum write rate of 1.5 MB/sec be fast enough for this entry level "camcorder"?

That depends. How much space does, say, a 30-second clip take up?

I know it can; the Rebel is CF II-compatible, and those go up to 6GB. I was just talking about SD cards and the cameras that use them. Maybe I was wrong though.
