SD770SD1100

they look like they are almost identical cameras. from the reviews i read they seem to both be very good for there class, and they are also very close in price. at first i was drawn towards the 770 because it has a slightly larger sensor, but then it adds 2 more megapixels to it so i think that becomes a wash. i have read here on AT that 8MP is the sweet spot for this type of camera and size of sensor, so now i am torn. Are there really any major differences in these cameras? which one would you guys recommend? Sorry if this has been asked before. but i am out of the loop on P&S cameras since i moved to a DSLR. Thank you for you help.

It's irrelevant really. It is very very slightly larger, but it's not going to make any difference in noise since 1) 1/2.3" is still painfully small compared to a DSLR and 2) the 2 extra megapixels cancel out the slightly larger sensor.

I would suggest you just get whichever one is cheaper if you must get a Canon.

Otherwies, I would also suggest you consider the Panasonic LZ8, LZ10, FS3, TZ5, and Sony W120.

I feel that the SD series Canon Powershots are too pricey to be competitive in today's market. They don't really offer standout features like wide angle lenses, nor do they have a commanding lead in image quality (Panasonic has very similar image quality and sometimes better high ISO noise performance).

The one thing I absolutely HATE about the SD770 and 1100 are their lenses. With the zoom range starting at 38mm (SD1100) and 35mm (SD770), these cameras absolutely suck in any situation requiring wide angle coverage.

In contrast, most of Panasonic's point and shoots start at 28mm or lower, and even the less expensive models costing just $99 start at 30 or 32mm. This is a BIG improvement compared to 38mm on the Canons.

I'm in the market for the same type of camera...I'm leaning more towards the SD770. Or a SD1100 with a digital frame as a present. Gotta check out the panasonics, but i feel like with girls, it HAS to be a canon to show off to their friends.

Both Panasonic and Sony make some very slick looking models with all metal bodies and very small/thin form factors. Personally, I think they look better than the Canon counterparts, cost less, and offer more features and the same (if not better) image quality.

Have you checked out the Sony W120 and Panasonic FS3? Both have great features like image stabilized lenses with wide angle coverage, are stylishly designed, and can be had for $150.

i try and avoid sony on principle, and the reivew i was reading about the canon sd1100 directly compared it to the FS3 and the canon had noticeably better image quality. and another review had the sd770 with even sharper images then the sd1100 if it means i spend a few extra bucks for the image quality i will take it.

you'll be happy with either, to an extent. I've found after getting my SLR, anything p&s sucks =P I'd have to agree canon has been slacking in the IQ department, especially in low light (sans maybe the G10, but it's a different class). But I've found I'm not happy w/ the noise on any p&s because I have unrealistic expectations, hahaha.

Pick the cheaper one and shoot around.

I was trying to make the same choice as you recently.

dpreview has a pretty nifty comparison tool you can use to compare their features:

The biggest difference is probably the length of the zoom 35-105 vs 38-114, and the megapixels. If you do any cropping at all, having the 2 extra mp helps since the image quality is similar.

I ended up buying the 770.

*edit - removed ramble about plastic/metal bodies. personally, the 770 felt a bit more "solid" than the 1100. might be due to the slight weight difference though.
