SDD, where to begin?

Thinking about upgrading my 1-2 year old Q6600 build with an SSD and wondering what I should be looking at.

I'm hoping to spend under $200. I read the AT article today about kingston's new drive coming out in a few days for about $100 which is a great deal, but after reading about TRIM about 20 times in that article, it would be nice to get a drive that supports it now.

The 40gigs is fine for me, but I wouldn't be opposed to 64 or 80 price allowing. The Intel X25-M G2 looks great but is a bit more than I'd like to spend.

I'm thinking a 64 gig drive that supports trim is probably what I need? No idea what is supposed though, or what is popular these days.

I'd appreciate any suggestions!

My understanding is that if you don't get an intel SSD, then, from a performance standpoint, you want a drive with an indilinx controller and Samsung flash. From OCZ, this is the Vertex series. I know Super Talent has a series like this as well. These cost about $170 in 30GB versions and are $240 for 60 GB versions. The OCZ Agility series are based on non-Samsung flash but have the Indilinx controller; they're not quite the performer that the Vertex series is, but are still pretty good from what I recall reading. They're $200 with 60GB.

Hmm I see. I'm guessing those will be the type of drives that will support TRIM. Wish there was some sort of deal floating around for a 60gig, but it sounds like most of the decent drives are selling at a premium still.

Maybe I'll just try to grab one of the new 40 gig kingston drives if I can get one for MSRP and wait until something nicer drops in price.

Are you guys saying the ~$100 Kingston SSD is not gonna support trim?

According to the AT article, at least not YET, but probably in the future. I guess that's good enough for me for the price of entry

I've been thinking about the Kingston drive with the intel controller too. Sure it's not as good as the more expensive ones, but for $85 after rebate it's a great value. It's hard for me to spend twice as much on another drive that isn't going to be leaps and bounds better in all instances. I figure the kingston will get me by for a year or two until SSD prices are more reasonable and the technology matures.

I think that is what I'm going to try and go with. The g2 seems awesome, but its about $150 more.

seems like for the price the kingston should be good enough. anyone know where to order em? they are being released tomorrow, correct? midnight release anywhere online?

The Indilinx drives I see aren't much, if at all cheaper than the Intel G2s.

Speaking of price, I remember paying $200+ for a 7200 RPM Hard drive when they first came out in 2.5" form (for Laptops). 60GB... that was FAST at the time! :awe:
