The bad ones have a firmware update available that fixes all issues.

Got mine for seriously cheap black friday....love it!

Wish I knew where a firmware update for my 1TB drive could be. Each of three mainboards I've attached it to says it is only 32 MB, i.e. the cache size.

Warning,

This + HD content + Uncapped Internet= a hole in your wallet

I got three already, I am at the point of needing to build a raid array, but I don't know where to dump the data in the mean time.

I remember buying 250s in 3 packs from Woot at 50 bucks a pop and thinking that was a steal.

With drives at this price a hobbyist can build a petabyte cluster in his garage for under 100 grand. I hope they never hit that wall in the hard drive world, where they say to themselves "the average user has no need for this much storage" .

Erm, maybe, if you bought it after Jan 3rd, *and* it is a OEM, *and* the date code on the HD was *before* Jan 3rd, then yeah, it should have a 5 yr warranty. If not, then it is 3yr. Retail drives still got 5yr though.

At least, that is what I think they mean by this: (though, it still is a bit fuzzy)...
Q. What will happen to the inventory authorized distributors currently have?
A.On-hand inventory of Seagate customers will maintain the warranty in place at the time of original purchase. The 3-year warranty will apply to products shipped starting Jan 3 rd, 2009.

No matter what the FAQ says about going form 5y to 3y, they got some issues that need to be worked out with these newer/bigger HDs.

Erm I bought the drive that the OP posted, same drive, same place. When I said it has a 5yr warranty that wasn't a guess, seagates site confirms it.

Add Amazon.com to the list of retailers selling this particular drive for $130 shipped.

Fyi, if you tried contacting Seagate tech support for the updated firmware like I did and didn't receive a response, a poster at AVS's forum uploaded it:
1.5 tb SD1A & CC1H firmware

I ran the CC1H on 2 drives and seems fine so far.

The problem with the new firmware is that it doesn't fix the problem. It will still freeze, lockup or have bad sectors.

They have a new "version" of this out - I bought one from Newegg a week ago, doesn't require a firmware update.

I've recently experienced a rash of failures of Seagate 160gig drives installed in client machines. I have at least a dozen of them stacked up. I decided no more Seagate drives for me until they get their act together. I won't touch any of the larger drives. I've switched over to WD's for now. NHever thought i'd see the day that Seagate went in the crapper but I guess stranger things have happened. Especially lately.

I have one replaced by Seagate. Purchased from TigerDirect and was poorly packaged. Old one had CC1J and replaced one has CC1H. I still have delayed write errors and frozen system on my Vista X64 machine. Drive seem to run okay on a Win2000 box.

I wouldn't touch any of these drives, the issues are not worked out. Just buy a WD and be done with it.

hans007 is right. goto the Seagate forums and you'll see quite a bit of dying 1.0tb drives.

You know, we really need to start snapping pics of these retailers that package stuff poorly.

Then we can post it all in one thread, and then & only then will they pay attention.
