your drive is actaully broken.

i had a hitachi that would do that, the controller board is dead.
hans007 is right. goto the Seagate forums and you'll see quite a bit of dying 1.0tb drives.
Turns out it is fine. Downloaded SeaTools for DOS, burned to CD, booted to program and reset maximum native size. Worked like a charm. Really huge drive. My second, though first was an Hitachi which is still working fine in another machine.

Just to let you know, my Seagate firmware is SD15.

Ya, they sent me the "new version" on my first RMA.....still sux.

I pd $104 for this drive, and that was too much!

I got my two replacements back just last week and just had them installed and running now. I hope I don't lose my data since these are suppose to be my backup drives :/

I have to agree with so many buyers on this particular product. Buy at your own risk.

I have taken your dare...been using Seagates for years and I have had much LESS trouble form them than other manufacturers. Went through two Maxtor's in less than a year at one point--haven't lost a Seagate yet.

I'll be using it as a "storage" drive. I'll be sure to post here if it gives me any trouble. For that price, with the warrenty and the history...worth it to me.

With the stuff I've read about their recent drives, I don't trust Seagate at this point.

At 1TB or greater, that's just too much porn to lose!

Too bad they didnt have it before I RMA'ed my 640 GB and paid the $20 advance recovery fee (which used to be free with maxtor).

the benchmarks for th e500gb one on the web seem to indicate its not really faster. the 1.5 TB has 375gb platters so i figured its not a huge difference. they havent announced anything over 1TB yet for the new platters wonder why.

The preliminary benches for the 500 GB 7200.12 are indeed disappointing. Perhaps we are starting to experience diminishing returns based on platter and cache size. Instead of 125-135 MB/sec average transfer speeds, we're only seeing around 102-108MB/sec. Write speeds are pretty good though. Fewer platters should at least mean greater reliability, that's if Seagate wasn't so extremely deficient in this department lately.

And while the 1.5TB 7200.11 performs exactly as expected, in my mind, it's too risky a choice. I'm currently in a holding pattern, waiting to see what WD has up its sleeve.

Seagate Sux, and has no answer to these problems. I grabbed a 1tb Hitachi for $77, and will do a second RMA on the Seagate in a year when they figure out the product they released way too soon!

I'd be happy to hear of a class-action suit. This drive should be pulled from the market until it's right.

well supposedly the 7200.11 drives are fine once you have the SD1A firmware. they just released that firmware for all the sub 1.5TB drives (the 1.5TB drive had that firmware earlier on).

I mean they may have released the drive too early, or it wasj ust a bug in the firmware. At least its not some sort of physical problem with the actual drive mechanism like the infamous deathstars.

It depends upon your HD. Some get the SD1A firmware, others get the CC1H firmware. Seagate itself gives a rather unsatisfying answer to this. Hopefully the CC1H firmware is ok (initial reports say it has fixed the issues) as that's what my 2 came with.

BTW - if your particular drive should have SD1A, the CC1H firmware will brick it, and vice versa. Or so says Seagate.

BTW, I'm hoping Newegg gets a new stock of Hitachi 1TBs in. Those seems fine by all accounts, and 3 of those would serve as a nice back up for the 2 Seagates.

Ever since I had 3 WD drives fail in one SEMESTER at college, I haven't been able to stomach their drives. I didn't even use my computer that much. I eventually sold the 3rd replacement on eBay, then put a Maxtor, or Seagate (not a deathstar) in there and it lasted me the rest of college.

But seriously, what HDD maker isn't on somebody's blacklist these days? If you remember back far enough, they've all had a quality issue here or there.

... and that's not an apology for Seagate. They gotta get their stuff together. You don't mess around when it comes to hard drives.

The 7K1000 is fast enough, at least for what I need. It will run cooler and quieter if you utilize this utility from Hitachi.

You are correct on speed: I'd love to get the .B 3 platter version for a sub $100 price, but I'll probably have to wait a few months for that to happen.

Alternatively, the WD 1TB green drive is for 89.99 at your neighborhood Fry's on clearance.
