$10 more than last week's Simpletech at CompUSA but 2 fewer rebates.

Circuit City has Seagate 160GB external drive for $59.99 after $30 and $40 CC MIRs. Free shipping.

specs say "2MB cache"

is that a 2mb cache on the drive -- or the "device" ?

Can I swap out the 160 for something like a 300GB w/16MB cache?

I'm sure USB2 is the performance limiting factor in this -- but in my above scenario, do I end up with a 160GB 2mb cache drive, or ?what?

Reason I ask is because I''m in the market for an enclosure -- but if I bought this for a little more, I could end up with a 160gb internal drive for another machine.

2mb cache is on the harddrive. you should be able to take the harddrive out and swap it with another one.

Will this work with a Mac laptop (iBook)???

The following is listed on the specs on circuitcity.com:

System requirements
PC: Windows® 98SE/ME/2000/XP, available USB 2.0 port
Mac®: N/A
----------------------

If you look at Seagate's page for external drives (http://www.seagate.com/products/retail/external), it says "Perfect for your PC or Mac."

But then if you look at the spec sheet (http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datasheet/ds_ulc_v4.pdf), it does not list Mac. It does say: "Operating systems not listed here may provide device drivers for USB mass storage devices."

I don't see why this wouldn't work for a Mac. Anyone???

Overall I'm sure it's better to buy an external enclosure, then a custom internal drive, but this is for a relative who'e not quite as tech-savvy, so I wanted something simpler. And the price looks very good!

Should work. Just return it if it doesn't.

modern operating systems generally provide the necessary usb storage drivers

i figure $20 to $25 for an external enclosure, so the price per gig for just the drive is $0.25 or less, which is pretty good for a 'small' drive such as a 160.

Cool, I think I'll recommend this to the fam. I hope it works. Usually I'd spend more time reading 100 reviews / threads, but it's not for me, so I don't have time

My external drive came pre-formatted NTFS. To get it to work with a mac I had to re-format it FAT32. WINXP doesn't give me the FAT32 option unless I chose a partition of 30GB or less. After that, drag and drop.

fat32 can only be formatted 32gb and smaller.

drive seems like an excellent deal though. would be great for backups and such. im thinking about getting one myself but i know i dont need it. $59.99 is cheap though

Includes AC adaptor and power cord. Bummer.... I'd spring for it if it was powered through USB, but a power brick and cord just add weight and hassle...
