I hope this isn't some kind of trend (last week I jumped and got the 8x TDK DVD burner for a song)

I can't keep getting stuff just because it's a great deal...

or can I?

Is $130 AR a song? I thought it was a good deal, but I didn't know that it was that good. Is it?

How much faster is this SATA drive than a IDE drive? What if I used it in an external enclosure?

SATA = Same as ATA100/133 - must have a SATA enclosure if there is such a thing?

Pretty good deal, considering that the cheapest 160GB I've seen lately is the IBM 7k250 160GB at Fry's after christmas sale for $70 AR, and a decent SATA converter will cost you at least >$20. So $90 for a 160GB SATA drive is a good price.

Well, I was hedging on getting a plextor 8x burner for $190 after rebate when this deal came up, so it was a no brainer to me. I was singing to myself, let's leave it at that.

I haven't heard of using SATA in external enclosures.

I'm just hoping I don't talk myself into getting more than one of those SATAs tomorrow...

Credit to the identical thread over at chubby wallet, you have to bring this printable ad to get the deal:

link

By the way, the price breakdown is:

$159.99
- $20 instant savings
- $50 MIR
--------------------------------
= $89.99 AR

So the rebate amount is $50 which is not bad at all, considering the HD deals these days commonly involve rebate amounts > $100.

Does anyone know what kind of power connector this hard drive has? Does it use the old molex or the new Sata power connector?

I have the 120GB version of this drive. It has the SATA data & power connection. This does mean you WILL need to purchase a seperate Molex to SATA converter. They should only run a few bucks.

P.S. The drive works great, I've had no problems with it. If you decide to use this, be aware you will need the Silicon SATA drivers for WindowsXP (available online) to detect the drive on install.

I plan on picking up one or two of these today, but does anyone have more information about the molex adapter I will need for power? Anyone know if CompUSA has them, and if so what price?

Thanks

Apparently most PS don't have "native" (Seagate?) sata power connectors, so you need this cheapie ($3) converter?

HTH...

The retail packaged drive from CompUSA doesn't need an additional power converter to connect to a molex power cable...

From your link: "With the exception of retail packaged drives available from Seagate Authorized Retailers, Serial ATA drives will require a SATA data cable (which is normally included with the motherboard or controller card) and a power supply adapter cable."

and from the product page for the 160GB SATA drive: "Comes with
everything you need/Complete kit includes drive, interface cable, Serial ATA power adapter cable, disc utility CD, quick-installation guide and mounting screws."

Thx a ton. I was just working off what someone higher in the thread said about needing an adapter. Glad to hear its included.

Just as a warning, be prepared that you may have to fight for this one. I went to the Chandler, AZ store, and first it rang up at 169. After checking out, I noticed, and informed them that the price was wrong. They told me I had to tell them I knew it was on sale to get the sale price. When they re-rang it, they charged me 149, which I also explained was wrong. They pointed to the disclaimer on the bottem of the page and told me regional prices may vary, and they dont have to honor that price.

After returning all of my purchases. I went home and called a different store to see if they would honor it, and accidentally got the same store. According to the automated price & availability system, that store had it for $89 after rebate, so they were obviously trying to scam me. If they do it to you, make them call their automated price checker. It should reflect this price.

One thing to be aware of - these are supposed to be fairly noisy drives. Do a search in the hardware forum for 7200.7 or read the reviews at newegg.

She's a LOT quieter than my 160gb maxtor 8mb.

Comes with the power adapter and an sata cable!
Good deal for the buck.

Bring a printout to the b&m as the price in store is 169.99

What's the noise like when it's reading/writing/seeking (ie: not just spinning). This seems to be the biggest complaint about these seagate SATA drives.

I'm mirroring the two as we speak, and can't hear it from 3 feet away. Not near the noise level of some of my older drives or my case fans. They are in a Dell 400sc, so if I get close enough I can hear the constant head movement, but once the mirror is done I doubt I will even hear the normal writes. I can not hear any rotational noise, even with my ear against the case.

As to the printout, I did have it, and they pointed to the bottom that said regional prices may vary and said that meant they didn't have to honor it. I went across town and got it no problem, so I guess I need to call the regional manager and let him know what a prick the guy was being.
