Outpost has a decent deal on this Seagate ATA 200GB hard drive.

$119
-$60 Rebate
= $59.99

Expires 5/31

Edit: Seems as though they jacked up the price a bit, now the final price is $79.99.

Edit#2: Well, according to deejayshakur you can get this drive for $59.99 in store, however the price remains $79.99 online. Can anyone else confirm this in store price, I am curious if it was just a fluke or if it is that price in all the stores.

Edit#3: Price Update

yeah, seems like a wack deal, the price should be $100, then a rebate if needed to drop it down to .30/cents again, really should have to have a rebate to get that kind of price

Same here, I've never had a problem w/Seagate rebates, plus I'll take a 5-yr warranty over the 1-yr ones WD and Maxtor are offering anytime.

I recently built a computer for a friend using one of these drives, and I will have to say that considering the warranty and how quiet the drive is you couldn't do better.

Heh Einstein...

Seagate (and their delegated rebate agents - e.g. Parago) had *lots* of trouble processing 160GB and 200 GB rebates from Fry's and others last year.

I personally had to send letters to the associated BBBs (for both Seagate and Frys/Outpost) and my state's Attorney General in order to get my rebate. I finally got a response and some action from Seagate's legal department.

It is hopefully cleared up now, but it certainly *was* an issue here (AnandTech) and on other web sites.

In the future I suggest you do more research before spouting off....

Seagate *did* deserve the heat for some very poor rebate handling.

Other than the rebate debacle, I do appreciate the drive itself and its associated 5 year warranty. But then again, I have had no hard drive failures with any of the major hard drive mfgs (e.g. Seagate, Western Digital, Maxtor etc.).

Going back to the original IBM PC, I have had one Quantum hard drive failure that required return under warranty.

Got three Seagate rebates back within 2 months of sending off for them, including 120gb, 160gb, and 200gb drives. Sorry you had so much trouble with yours. I personally had 5 IMBs bite the dust and am a believer in Seagates current efforts. 5 year warranties and quiet... I like! Just wish they'd offer the 400gb drives for $200 with a $50mir... one can dream.

yeah, that'd be nice.

my first seagate rebate last year came, though slowly, without much trouble.

the second two i had to call them several times before they did anything. they took 3 and 4 months for those 2.

but the drives are good.

edit: anyone know if this is a 2 platter 7200.7 or a 1.5 platter 7200.8?

How did you get it to 119?
It was $119.99 before rebate. I had this sucker in my shopping cart and was browsing other items. Some time between 5:15AM and 5:30AM PST the price went up to $139.99, including the one I had in my shopping cart. Bastids!

This drive is (as of this writing) still listed as $119.99 when you browse hard drives by category: Hard Drives & Memory » Hard Drives » Internal Retail Kits » Parallel ATA.

But when you click on the item to bring up the product page or add it to your cart, its 139.99.

You keep crapping in every thread claiming that regular hard drive prices used to be absurdly low (and provably false) in spite of numerous hot deal enthusiasts who constantly monitor prices, purchase dozens of hard drives annually, and have 1000 x more posts than you agreeing unanimously that you have no clue what you're talking about.

At $0.30 per GB, the following capacities would 'normally' retail for:

80GB = $24.00
120GB = $36.00
160GB = $48.00
200GB = $60.00

Which is provably absurd. Historical prices going back two and three years are easy enough to find:

Western Digital 80GB

Western Digital Caviar 80GB Retail

Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 80GB

Maxtor 200G

Maxtor MaxLine II Plus 250GB

Maxtor 300GB

IBM 80GB

Hitachi DeskStar 180GXP 80GB

Hitachi 250GB

Seagate Barracuda 120GB

Seagate Barracuda 160GB

wow the hard drive gods are really making me hurt. after i stupidly tried to merge 2 partitions using partition magic, thinking i would reorganize some files and try to save money by not buying another hd yet, the merge failed, effectively corrupting most of my data. as i try to recover it now, i am set on picking one of these up when alas, the price has gone up! but really guys, remember to back up your data. but you probably already knew that :|

So a deal can only be hot if their is rebates involved? How many have bought into it and never received any? some who doesn't receive it just squanders off and never heard from them ever since. It's a one shot deal if you ask me, and is not hassle free either.

My wife (as of 5/29/05 ) didn't get a Seagate/Fry's rebate. I had one that took over 5 months and a few phone calls, but I did get it. YMMV.

Weekend Fry's newspaper ad in San Diego shows a 200GB Seagate for $59.99 AR.

Price is back up to $139.99, with only a $50.00 rebate available. Total price: $89.99, tax + S&H not included (if applicable).

$0.45/GB isn't that hot.
