Are you saying that you installed Windows ME on it and then installed XP Pro SP2 on it? How is that possible, is that possible?

Is the computer in your sig the one you installed it on? the a64 3200? if not, if its a pentium 2 or something, it might have a bios cap at ~127gb.. i think seagate has a utility to get around this

Alternatively you could have a jumper set on it to cap it.. did you set the jumper wrong?

Did you partition the drive correctly? is there ~50gb sitting unpartitioned?

Its for my HTPC and my cpu is a PIII 1Ghz and the motherboard is an abit so I think i would have to update the BIOS but you said something about the CD that came with the hard drive....... Tell me more about that....

A P3 shouldn't have that cap.. so i wouldn't say thats the problem. That cd that came with the drive, however, might be useful.. stick it in, see if it detects it as a 200gb drive, and if it is partitioned correctly, etc.

You have Hit the 137 gb limit, windows me will not reconize anything larger. Your best bet is to get a full blown copy of windows xp SP2. I never recommend anyone ever buy the upgrade version of windows since this is one of many reasons.

Also you could try to Reformat the drive with a 3rd party utuilty, like Ontrack Disk Manager or use another computer with xp sp1 and use it to format the drive using the windows disk manager.

For a long while I was dual booting between windows 2000 and windows 98. I had both OS' installed on my pc. You can choose which one during the boot process. EDIT your boot.ini file to do it.

you dont need windows ME. windows XP upgrade disc will allow you to run a full clean install of XP. boot from the CD, and when you are finalizing the installation it will ask you for you to insert a cd of a previous verison of windows to complete the installation.

Since you installed windows ME, the setup likely formatted to its max, which is 137GB FAT32 with 32kb clusters.
backup your data, and reinstall windows xp by booting with it. From there you can reformat the the drive NTFS.

Just put in the XP SP2 CD, boot, and follow instructions. At some point it will ask you to insert the ME disk, and then put the XP disk back in.

The upgrade version just means you MUST own a previous version of windows.

Control Panel -> Administration Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management -> right click on the unpartition space and format it -> Full 200 gigs

I had to do it last night for my 160 gig. And it was after I already planned to buy partition magic to do the same thing for me. oh well.

His cd may not boot like has been said, because most bios's defaults don't set the boot order so the CD rom comes before the hard drive. He may need to change that first.

Aplefka, his problem is different than yours, he installed Windows ME, not XP. And Windows ME uses FAT32 which has a practical maximum 127gb. Windows XP can only format fat32 up to 32GB. He needs to reinstall WIndows XP from scratch.

FAT32 has a maximum volume size of 2Tb, not 127Gb. Yes, that's Terrabytes.

Yeah, MS forces that limit on people. If you format FAT32 from Linux, Mac OS, or HD manufacturers utility CDs you can format greated than 137GB. Most of the retail external HDs are formatted with FAT32, regardless of the size.
