I see... didn't read the fine print... heh...

How does this match up to the Hitachi 200gb Desktar 2K250?

I didn't think the 7200.7 series came in 200GB.. I checked out storagereview.com and they don't have a 200GB version listed either. Then again, this info is bacfk in june/july 2003 when seagate announced their entire line.

Anyone know what hte actual model is?

EDIT:

Found out this is indeed the 7200.7 series, but this is the "7200.7 PLUS" series which has a 3year warranty, whereas the standard 7200.7 (non-plus) only has 1 year warranty.

From Storagereview.com:

"Ever since the 'Cuda IV, the Seagate Barracuda ATA series has set a standard for quiet operation. The 7200.7 series continues the trend. Though its score of 39.9 dB/A at a distance of 18 millimeters is a bit higher than that of the 'Cuda V's, the PATA 7200.7's objective idle noise measurement nonetheless remains exceptional. Make no mistake -- anything below 40 dB/A is very, very quiet. Note that the SATA drive's native power connector prevents it from powering up using our standard AT power supply- it needs an active controller signal to spin up. We're investigating potential solutions at this time. Subjectively speaking, however, the SATA drive's idle noise is identical to that of the PATA unit. Seek noises for both drives are very muted and barely audible over the testbed's quiet CPU and power supply fans. "

(in their tests, teh 7200.7 scores 39.9dB/A noise and 19.5 deg celcius in temp.)

So looks like this is a HOT deal IMO since it has 3 year warranty and is still under 40db/A noise with the coolest running!

The 160GB version of this drive didn't perform as well as most of the other drives in that review @storagereview.com. But still i guess a several millisecond performance hit wouldn't be that noticeable given all these 8MB cache drives' already respectable speeds, right?

IMHO - the 7200.7 is the quietest drive on the market with good performance - see the storagereview performance database. That's probably its strongest feature. My Cuda IV has become quite loud on reads over the past two years, and hearding the difference between it and my two new 7200.7's is remarkable.

Might pick this one up and sell one of mine - the CompUSA deal is usually 160gb drives for $100-110.

Are you sure about the 3 year warranty? If so, this is not a bad deal for an ATA, albeit ATA100. All I could find was for 1 year, which sadly seems to be the standard these days Seagate warranty

This is an excellent drive, I have not had any problems with the any of the 20 or so Seagates I have purchased and setup for people in the couple of years, and I use 2 of them currently.

I would take this drive in a heart beat over the Hitachi.

For $10 more (AR outpost.com), the Hitachi 7K250 200gb is faster and quieter. Personally I didn't want to deal with a rebate, so I got a 7K250 160gb for $140 at newegg no tax free ship

From storagereview.com (http://www.storagereview.com/articles/200306/20030615ST3160023A_1.html):

"These days, warranties covering ATA drives confuse many readers. According to Seagate, the Barracuda 7200.7 Plus (model numbers ST3120026A and ST3160023A) come backed by three-year programs. All other 7200.7's, including the serial ATA models, are protected by a standard one-year warranty. "

These model #'s correspond to 120GB and 160GB drives, but the 200GB didn't exist back then.

If you go to seagate's website (http://www.seagate.com/products/discselect/index.html) and search for drive's larger than 150GB, and Ultra ATA format, the only 200GB drive (non-SATA) they have is a 7200.7 PLUS model which is part #ST3200822A and this page clearly shows that the warranty is 3 years for this model.

What is the actual seagate part # at compusa?

part # ST3200822A - RK
Would be nice to have 3 years - but on the box (wrapper) it says '1-year warranty'.

Pretty much it seems like all the "RK" = Retail Kit versions have only a 1 year warranty reguardless what the seagate site says. Seems like the OEM ones (ones without the retail packaging) have the 3 year warranties. I have 2 of the 160gb retail versions and they are sleightly louder than the Baracuda IV's.

This is a really good price for this drive since it normally sells for like $180.

I was amazed to get there about 15 minutes after Compusa opened, and I swear there were at least 50 of them on hand (Roseville, MN). I expected to be lucky to get the last one, but not this time.

I just ordered a 3.5" enclosure from Newegg for it. I for one was happy to get a drive this size for this price. It will be an occasional use back up drive for me, so I'm not going to be too picky on noise or speed or anything else - just that it works, and I'm sure it will.

Thanks to the original poster for the heads up, I wouldn't have seen this until I got around to reading the paper some time tomorrow (a day late).

I'm not sure, but I think 3.5" is a laptop drive size.. hope you didn't get the wrong enclosure.
