I picked up one of these at Fry's last month. It is a 7200.8 series. Benchmarked quite a bit faster than my old 160GB 7200.7 model.

My only complaint is that when I verified the warranty on the Seagate website it came up as 1 year! I ended up having to send them scans of my receipt, box and the drive itself before they would correct the problem. Now it shows a 5-year warranty starting at the date of manufacture (Dec. '05) - not the date of purchase. A reasonable person would think that a warranty begins the date of purchase!

I'm sure the 5-year warranty is a big factor for a lot of people when they buy Seagate. Just a heads up - make sure you check the date for your drive on their website.

Can one distinguish the difference between a 7200.7 and 7200.8 from the part number and serial number on the box?

Question: The rebate forms says, "One rebate will be issued per SKU per household."

Where is the "SKU" listed? Is an "SKU" the same as the UPC code? If you purchased this exact HD under a previous rebate offer from Outpost, do you qualify for this new rebate offer. In other words, is it the same SKU?

These are 7200.8's. Each rebate is for a specific time period. As far as I know there should not be a problem ordering more than one, as long as you only had one for each rebate.

I've now ordered 4 of these (one through a friend). Gonna build a RAID 5 array - 750 GB media server.

i realize 7200.8's are newer but from what i've red on storagereview, they have a higher failure rate. i'm waiting for the 7200.9's.

My understanding is that the 7200.7s are super reliable. So my FIRST choice would be a 7200.7.

I did a $20 Seagate rebate in January on a 160 gb drive. Mailed it the end of January, received an email confirmation the middle of February, got the check on March 1. Right around 5 weeks total time. Not bad, me thinks.
