now that the online warranty database is up again...
Ok uhm wtf.
My 8 meg drive says 2010, but my 16 meg drive says 2007??!?
Something screwy is going on.
Ok I'm going to call them. (they are open today oddly enough)
And it cant be that outpost is not authorized (aside from the reasons regarding retail drives), because both the 8 meg and 16 meg ones I have are from outpost.
According to thier website, the only drives aren't covered are external ones. Here's some quotes from thier warranty FAQ

4. Does the five-year warranty apply to internal Retail Kit purchased after the new warranty date, even if the printed box indicates only a 3-year warranty?
Yes, if purchased after July 26, 2004 the internal products will have the five-year warranty. Packaging reflecting the new warranty will soon be on Retail shelves. If Retail customers have questions about the warranty on their internal Retail products, the can access their warranty information at
www.seagate.com.
5. Does the five-year warranty apply to products purchased just last week?
The warranty is retroactive to all eligible drives that were purchased from Seagate after July 26, 2004.
I'm pretty sure that these are
Barracuda 7200.8 drives. The 7200.7 were released in middle of 2003, so that still doesn't fit for very old drives, 7200.8 surely was released later.
(looks like begining of 2005 was release of 7200.8)

Ok this is BS. After being on hold for 20 mins they send me to the warranty dept. They tell me that this drive started out with a 2 year warranty (bs, why did thier website say after 2004 all drives were 5 year?) which means that this drive was manufactured in mid 2005 (which is logical). Then they tell me to get the 5 years I have to send in a "high resolution scan"
Of 3 things. The outpost receipt, the top of the drive showing model and serial, and the 5 year warranty sticker on the box.
And I just checked the box, there is no "sticker" showing that. Its as part of the printed packaging on the back. They must have been telling me a sticker, thinking this was an old drive that just had a sticker slapped on it with old packaging. But its not.
WTF is this about. Something is incorrect here, why would they say on the website everything after mid 2004 had the new warranty and then these dont automatically?
I can tell you this, if I end up having to send in a "high resolution scan", its going to be a minimum of 100 megs per picture. Pulling out the drive thats already installed is going to take a bit of work.
