It's so-so deal as far as $$ per capacity. SATA still carries a hefty premium and rarely comes close to the golden $0.25/GB rule. Sure this Seagate drive is fast, quiet, and cool running, but the only reason why I got it was to use as drives for a server. If it was for personal use, I would've waited for some kick-butt deal on PATA. It's not HOT in the $$/GB sense, it's quite warm as far as value goes.

it doesn't matter how much cheaper it is relative to other hard drives. it's good at ~28c per gig but it's still ONLY $5 below regular price.

Larger Data recovery companies such as Ontrack, Drive Savers and Action Front offers any type of Data Recovery at a premium because the are at the top of the field. I bet 866.Lost.Data is up there in the top 10. With that being said they will charge $1500+ regardless of the technology. But a smaller and less expensive data recovery company will not have the much needed firmware modules to manipulate the OD (outer diameter) section of of these newer drives and donor parts are a premium for them with looooow volume of work (since its new). So I doubt you will get billed the same from say a 2 year old SATA drive from a less expensive shop. But the point of my remark was to stimulate conversation, everyone should consider a data backup plan because drives do fail, even new ones. Even if you have drives in RAID 5 or RAID 6 a crazy lightning storm could fry everything, so backup your very most important stuff on DVD or even remotely.

Anyone wanna compare two of these things in RAID 0 to, e.g., a Raptor in terms of booting and loading large files (maps, videos, etc)? I don't know much about HDD speeds but I'm building a new machine and trying to decide what storage option to go with...there's a deal running right now for a 150gb Raptor for 200 AR, and two of these would be the same price...LOTS more space, but am I sacrificing significant speed? Thanks.

doesn't matter how the price compares to other hard drives. it's still only $5-$10 off its regular price. that's not hot... it just happens to be [regularly] cheaper than others drives.

I only shop for SATA drives, I just like their convenience compared to PATA. Current drive is a Seagate 7200.7 160GB, which is just about full, and from time to time makes odd clicking sounds. So I wanna clone it to the new drive, then format the old one and use it purely for data storage (mostly DVD's).

Uh, I don't think these have ever been $300 - not even going above around $120-130 at Newegg even when it was first out. You must have been thinking of the 300GB models when those first came out, not this new 320GB.
