edit: Here in the LA area. From comments, Houston and other areas, too.

Matches the lowest no rebate prices I've seen on these. Take your pick, SATA or PATA. Didn't mention a limit, so this might be good for that RAID build.
Could be 7200.9's or 7200.10's. We'll see.
edit: so far, some .9's, some .10's. Is there any way of knowing from the retail box?

Noob glossary :
OTD= out the door
B&M=brick and mortar ( a walk-in retail store )
PATA= parallel interface
SATA= serial interface

just called and confirmed in Houston, TX that they are selling for 99.99 B&M, sales person couldnt tell me, however if it was 7200.10 or 9. Circuitcity.com has this for like 250 or something, anyone think a PM would work? that'd be an extra 15 bucks off or so...

Good. I'd like another 7200.10 or two. - and welcome to AT, opportunemoment

Three is a suspicious number. RAID 5 ?

I built a software RAID 5 setup using a gaggle of three Seagates from previous deals- a 320GB 7200.10 sata, a 400GB 7200.10 sata, and a 400GB 7200.9 pata. (640GB of raid 5 and 160GB of raid 0) It works quite well (fast) and protects the data from single drive failure.

I just purchased 4 from frys.com.

7200.9 are ones made in Singapore.
7200.10 are made in China.
Look at the box and you can tell if its china or singapore.

3 of mine was singapore (7200.9)
1 of mne was china (7200.10).

Software raid 5, how's the write speed.
I just setup a raid 5 w/ 4 x 400gb on a 3ware 9500s-8. Read is decent but write is slow. Its slower when you attempt to write more than one file at the same time. Its on a 33mhz pci 2.1 bus. System is a 1.4 p4 so its not fast but does it need to be?

Na, don't think I will do that until I can afford a good SATA card, software seems a bit slow.
Picked 2 up for RAID 1 and 1 for a friend. Was almost burned with a drive failure earlier this week.

The China/Singapore clue should help.

Re: raid5. Random write speed is slower, but you are backing up as you go along. Didn't notice any multiple file effect. I think the s/w raid hack is quite good. Cons are:
The Windows hack (Tom's hardware) takes a bit of time.
Works w/XP pro or win2000, but not XP home.
Motherboard has to have enough drive connections

When I did some tests with sandra a while ago, the read speed of the software raid 5 was a little faster than a single drive, but the write random speed was considerably slower.
This is expected and inherent with a redundant array, since a min 1 read and 2 writes is needed for each random write with raid5. For a 4 drive array, 2 reads and 2 writes are required for each random write. For writing blocks of data, though, the write burden will only be an extra write per 3 writes or 25%.

The neatest part of the testing was replacing one of the drives with a blank drive and seeing the system automatically rebuilding the array. Magic.

Yes, losing a drive and data is an experience one doesn't want to repeat. I was burned, but not lately.
Raid 0 and 1 is built-in on most boards now. Easily and practical protection.
