Preference? They both have 5-year warranty nowadays too.

Like me, I'd go for the Seagate over the Maxtor. Yes I know Seagate bought Maxtor, but aren't they still running off of the old Maxtor manufacturing processes ATM?

You do have to login and all to enter the code, but yeah, still works. Gonna grab one tonight!

Nice find, OP!

Oops. My bad.

Edit This is pretty funny. It's linked at the New Egg homepage as a "hot deal." Of course, it's the Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 at the same price as the OP's post for the 7200.10. Thanks OP, I'm in.

Just ordered one of these, but LavidDichterman's post has got me worried. Is there a good procedure to stress test on the drive before putting real data onto it? I'm thinking of filling it up to 99% capacity and then run scandisk or something.

*ALL* HDs fail. The best thing you can do is enable SMART in the BIOS, and have a SMART monitoring program for your system running. This should at least let you know the drive is degrading, and for you to backup.

Too bad that you would need another 500GB HD to back up the 500GB HD you got, or have a ton of free time to backup onto DVD-Rs

Oh, and forget about using these things with USB/1394, since those do NOT support SMART, so you have no idea when it will fail. If you want external, then use eSATA external cases.

Seagate bought Maxtor... if I'm not completely out of it.

Maxtor will be like a value line now.

current promos

Since these codes are on their public website, this should be allowed.

I phoned Egghead's marketing department. Their official policy is that these codes are intended for use only by those who receive their promotional emails.

I still think I'd like the 500GB WD RE2 for 19.99 more. Especially since I plan on putting the drive into an eSATA/USB2.0 controller.

I've already received mine. Waiting for my next build to use it. And yes, it says made in China.

Yeah, I had a USB/eSATA external case. I hadn't purchased the eSATA expresscard yet. Thankfully I was able to use reiserfsck to rebuild the drives I transferred the data from. A good way to tell would be noise levels of the drive while seeking. Mine was VERY loud. :-/ I'm no expert on this stuff, I might have just gotten a bad egg from newegg (pun intended). Just a heads up. I'd go with an OEM WD if I could switch even though I almost always like seagate drives.

As cool as perpendicular recording technology is, the Western Digital SE16 is faster and quieter for the same price.

While it may be quieter, it is NOT faster. In fact, the WD is slower than both the 7200.9 and the 7200.10 Seagate drives. Check the specs. Both drives beat the WD across the board.
