Ugh, I'm having a hard time in this thread sifting through info about the drive and discussions on storage measurements.

I'm really liking the 6TB and I want to use it as a backup drive, but I also don't want to have to change it out in a year if it fails...is 1TB per platter pretty standard/reliable these days? I'm assuming the 4TB drives are 4x 1TB platters? Is there a reason there aren't many 5TB drives? Couldn't they just use 5 - 1TB platters (and possibly not have to change the physical location of the screws in the drive)?

There is no reliability data available for these, since they are brand spanking new.
Bottom line is, no matter what HD you get, you still need to make active backups, since they will all fail sooner or later.

Strangely no one seems to have any pictures of the product or specs from Seagate direct that specify the RPM. Some websites such as Amazon have it listed at 7200 RPM and others have It listed a 5900RPM. I wish Seagate would acknowledge they make the drive. For some reason even though I've contacted them twice they say they have no info on those drives.

I got one of the 6TB Seagates for my Mac Pro 3,1 2008 and was surprised by the change in screw holes. I used the 2 available ones - but that was clearly not enough. I just taped the other end and then put it in slot #1 - the leftmost one. It has the fan mounting right under it and would give it support.
Maybe someone will make some sleds with screws that match the new drives...?

OWC will be shipping new drive sleds for the Mac Pro's soon.

I've seen many people posts this as 7200-rpm and 5900-rpm. I'm not sure what is right anymore. But this is what my NAS4Free box tells me:

Device Model: ST6000DX000-1H217Z
Serial Number: XXXXXXXXX
LU WWN Device Id: 5 000c50 0673758f5
Firmware Version: CC46
User Capacity: 6,001,175,126,016 bytes [6.00 TB]
Sector Sizes: 512 bytes logical, 4096 bytes physical
Rotation Rate: 7200 rpm
Form Factor: 3.5 inches

That right there just conflicts with what you just said. So who's right?

BTW, I just got 8 of these 6TB drives from Newegg via Ebay for $199.99 EA + tax (deal's over already). Will see how long they lasts...

That drive is the 5900 rpm on Amazon that is running the cheaper price. THe best price I have seen in the past 2-3 months has been on ebay via newegg for the 7200rpm version at $200 I am waiting for that to popup again.

My firmware reads CC47

Good luck finding it, there's nothing on seagates site about this drive.

BTW - Price is $250 on the egg, 29% off.
