Anyone excited about these? I'll replace my annoying Caviar Black once a 32mb cache version comes out and is around $50.

I'm more excited for the 2TB version. But yeah, the 500GB 7200.12 could replace the WD 640GB as the best mid-range drive.

Just had one of these arrive today to replace a dying WD 160GB that was my boot disk. Like that it's thinner than my 7200.8 200GB and 7200.10 500GB so it'll breathe a bit easier in the P180 HDD cage.

Funny thing is that when I was trying to decide which 500GB to get on newegg, you couldn't find anything on the Seagate website searching by the model number. I eventually found a press release using "7200.12" from this week, but kudos to newegg for having it in stock before the mfr had a chance to update their website

Will give it a whirl tomorrow..

So I'm assuming it is the same thickness at the 72.10 250's then?

Definately sounds like a good RAID cage canidate, most people don't understand how much cooling hard drives need in groupds and this should help alot.

I'm very excited about the 500GB platters. Hopefully we will see 1TB drives in the $70 range soon as manufactuing costs go down. Quite, more reliable, and of course 2.5TB five platter drives arriving shortly. I'll be able to put nearly an entire month's worth of incrementals on a single drive. Keeping all that restorable data on a single eSata drive will be unbelievably handy.

I'm really drooling over what cheap storage servers and NAS will be capable of. If you can put 8 drives and a controller in a machine for under $2000 that's 17.5 TB worth of storage... That's a ton of data.

which model are you talking about, can you link it?

Are you talking about the single platter 500 gb drive or the 4 platter design 500 gb drive that's been out and has 5 reviews

I'm interested but worried about Seagate's track record when it comes to noise.

It should be better than my squealing Caviar Black.

i was thinking of getting a caviar black, they're supposed to be the best @ the moment, but i'll wait for these 7200.12s.

There is a 16mb cache 500GB although it's too expensive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16822148377

i think that's the 4 platter 500gb drive

The model number of this drive is actually the new SINGLE Platter version...hence the measly five reviews. Not much in terms of official reviews either...yet.

500gb on 1 platter? Man thats insane!

the 640gb wasn't all that much slower than a raptor, so this should close the gap even further.

The Google... Eprim mentioned it as well as TechPowerUp..also heard it on a tech podcast specifically referring to the Newegg lack of reviews so far.

For performance, they can short stroke the drive to decrease seeks (albeit with lower capacities).
