Seagate 7200.7 noise/vibrations when idling?

I just built a new system with Abit IC7-G mobo, two 80GB S-ATA 7200.7 drives and one regular 80GB IDE 7200.7 drive. It seems that ALL of them start making this "rattling"/vibrating noise when they have been idling for some seconds. As soon as the drives are accessed, they stop making the noise. I bought these HD's specifically to become as silent as possible, so it's a bit of a letdown - if at least the noise was consistent but it turns on/off as you can imagine depending on when you access which drives etc. It's not a loud noise, but it certainly is noticable over the noise of my CPU fan, TI4600 fan and Northbridge fan, although all of those have been turned down as much as possible.

I wrote Seagate support and they didnt hear about this problem before, they said there could possibly be something wrong "internally" with the drives. But THREE of them? It seems to me its a design flaw in the drives possibly??! Anyone with the same drives who are sure they DON'T have that problem or that they DO have it?

Download the Hitachi drive utility and enable acoustic managment. You should see a decrease in noise.

Acoustic management is no longer available on the 7200.7 series of hard drives. Seagate had to remove the feature due to legal issues. The last Seagate drive that can utilize AAM is the PATA version of the Barrcuda V.

My 7200.7's are loud under heavy R/W, but no problems at idle. Maybe its has something do the way they're mounted in your case.

The hitach drive tool can activate Acoustic managment on the SATA BaracudaV's. It can probably do it on the 7200.7's too.

Nope, it's been disabled in firmware. As said, the Barracuda V PATA is the last one in the series (for now) that has acoustic management available.

I'm having the exact same problems with the same drive, even thought about making an at command that just checks the hd every 2-3 minutes or so.

EXTREMELY ANOYING... like RIGHT now its making that noise

I emaled seagate some time ago and they said the same thing (few months ago, so they should know of at least one more incident), going to return it to the store I bought it from next week.

also, I tried connecting it to my external usb enclosure and with just the power connector connected and just about 30 seconds or so after it powers up the noise comes.

This may be worth nothing to you, but i have a 120gb 7200.7 and it's not making any type of unusual sound at all... I'd go with the suggestion of checking to see if anything can be done with the positioning of the drive in your case.

There you go. Scroll down to the Feature Tool.

Over at SilenPC Forums they have discussed it. But the feature tool should only work on the Cuda IV & V. On the Cuda V its only the PATA that officially supports AAM, but with the Feature Tool it also works on the SATA version.

I have a Baracuda IV 80g hd and an antec sonota case. When I have the case fan connected to the power supply (quiet mode), I can hear my hd seeking. When case fan is full blast, I can not hear it. Is a low pitched thumping noise. Doesn't really bother me, but I did not notice it at first and am wondering if this indicates a bad hd. I really only noticed it after running 3dmark 20003 and wondered if I overheated it. I have a P4P800 mb and Asus probe showed my under load temp as 40c cpu and 36c chipset (this can not be accurate). I am not overclocking anything. Using the Hitachi Feature Tool, I discovered that it was already set at quiet mode. Changing to normal mode does not make much difference in this sound, maybe a bit louder.
