Seagate 7200.8 200 GB NCQ SATA
It could be just in my head but it seemed really quiet when I first got it less than two weeks ago. Now it's very loud. It grinds away like a 6 year old Dell when doing the slightest of operations and is pretty annoying. This is my first "new age" harddrive but from what I've read these things are supposed to be quiet. Anyone else have any experience with these? Should I send it back and get a new one?

EDIT:
As far as your problem is concerned - back up everything immediately then contact the company and see if the warrenty will replace it.

I use a raptor drive - and it is a noisy little ah heck - but I love it

speed > quietness

I don't know about that model, but my Seagate 7200.7's are the most quiet hard drives I've ever used!

I don't know, if it was quiet then after a few months it got super loud, that's a bad thing in my book. Call the company ASAP and back up everything . Your HD may be ready to pass away, and I could assure you that it doesn't have anything set aside in its will for you if it passes away.

My advise - immediately back up everything.

I have 4 of them in one of my servers here at work. Quiet as a dell. Be worried!

That all depends on your definition of loud. My Hoover is quieter than my pc. But by no means do I think that I have a loud PC. A DC9 or A-10 to me is loud; but not my Hoover Elite.

Mmmm, if you hear hard metallica clicks or grinding during use or when the drive spins up, then I would definitely RMA it. Perhaps you can link a small sound clip if it is that bad.

Well it sounds like a normal hardrive would sound, no weird clicking... but its just really loud.
It is for sure louder than a 74 GB raptor... And yeah its a Barracuda.

The fact that it started off quiet is what makes me really wonder. I might as well RMA it and if the next one is just as loud, oh well.

Mine seems to have done the same thing. It started off totally and completely silent (I thought it had locked up because the hard drive light was on but I couldn't hear anything happening) but gradually got louder and louder. Now it's just as loud as any other drive I've used, but not loud enough to make me worry.

My best theory (other than a fault in the hardware) is that gradual filling of the drive has led it to write on a different part of the platter, which is louder. In particular, wherever my swap file is seems to be a bit of a grinder

Well, the 7200.7 was one of the quietest drives storagereview tested. Perhaps the 7200.8's are louder, but they're not supposed to be stupidly loud. I have tons of fans in my case so I could really care less how loud a HD is.

So if you COULD care less... is it safe to say you care a moderate amount how loud a HD is?

I have 2 7200.7 drives. One (80gb) became quite loud after a few months. The other (120gb) has stayed very quiet. The very quiet one has quit working properly and is being sent in for rma, even though it is newer. I bought it because I thought the first was ready to go.

I have the 200G sata seagate too, made in China I think, and it has to be the loudest of all my other hdd's ( even louder than my old 20G drive). So far I havent had any problems with it.

noise is relative to the other sounds in the computer but if you feel the sound has changed you have to contact seagate, they'll tell you to download their test diskette and run the tests and that'll decide on whether you can rma to them

newegg may have different requirements

I run a 7200.7 thats been great for the last year in my quiet antec sonata
