THe Seagate ST340016A super quiet hard drive utilizes Seagate's SoftSonic Fluid Dynamic Bearing (FDB) motor and runs at a barely audible 25 decibels. Additionally, it has about the best performance among 7200 rpm drives available. I've been using one of these for sometime and love it, though I admit I'm obsessed about keeping my machine virtually silent so this drive suits my purpose very well. But now, it's also the CHEAPEST ON PRICEWATCH of ALL 40GB hard drives, including the 5200rpm ones!!! So, it's a great deal I think, and the dealer I just bought another from, www.basoncomputer.com also has a reseller rating of 9.58 (6.42 is average!).

So here's the link:
LINK TO HARD DRIVE
Hope you find this as good a deal as I do.
Jet

EDIT: 60$ is the price for it AFTER shipping since shipping is free if you choose USPS shipping.

decent..you're better off buying a 80gb 7200rpm drive for ~80-90 off pricewatch though. I guess if you ONLY have $60 to spend it's a good deal..I have the 60GB version of this drive and it's fast, quiet and runs great at high FSB.

imo my seagate barracuda runs hot as hell, it hits about 102, then everything starts acting crazy, its very quiet, but you have to buy a hd cooling fan, i dont like that at all, since i dont have one right now, i have my case open and a big home fan running on it, hurting!

I have a segate 80 gb.....can't hear the damn thing run...nice. I turned off the acoustic management, so now I kinda hear a low grumble during bootup or defrag, but that's it.

Currently it's at 25C (according to the onboard SMART thermistor), and my room temp is 23.4C

I did remove their "sea-foam" protector from the underside of the drive (exposing the circuit board) because I figured that would just retain heat.....and have minimal impact on noise.

I agree, why get a 40gb? spend a few bucks more and go big(er).

My $.02

My experience has been much different- I wonder if there is something wrong with your drive? I don't have a case fan or have never noticed any problems and my case is pretty small.

Here's a review for the drive Review that also says, regarding the design of the HD,
"this kind of HDD design will improve the heat dissipation into the environment, which will undoubtedly have a positive effect on the overall drive's reliability."

I guess a lot of people like bigger hard drives now, but I've never filled my 40gb and am getting another for a second system. I guess if you wanted to store a lot of movies you might want larger, I just assume save a buck or two.

nugaluga is correct. Don't try to RAID a Seagate drive. There are a lot of problems with it.

Office Depot is usually the best place to buy a hardrive from .Here you can use a coupon and get a rebate when they have them offered. 60 bucks for a 40 gigger is too much these days.

I will NEVER deal with rebates again, so any deal involving them I skip immediately, as I suspect many others do. And the closet office store to me is ~1.5 hours. In any case, $60 shipped with no rebates is quite a good price, especially for this drive.

Just a note: If you send it to seagate they will replace it with a RAID-optimized drive, free of charge.

The Seagate 'cuda IV is really quiet, but it isnt the fastest one around. It doesnt run too hot either compared to other 7200rpm drives. Seagate's about to ship the next generation 'cuda V tho.

Im sorry, I dont. If you ask in GH I'm sure someone would be able to dig it up. I'm positive they will do it though.

There isnt a link. Just email Seagate and they will send you an email telling you what to do. They are sending me 2 60 GB in advance so that I am not without my computer. Then once I recieve those I send my old ones. Nice deal, new hard drives for free.

40 gigs is way too small! I just bought 3 120 gig hard drives from outpost.com for $109 each. This goes well with my 120g WD Special Ed. I had to take out my two other 80 gig drives though because I'm out of drive bays.
