Bestbuy has the SEAGATE EXTERNAL 750 gb HDD on sale for $379.00. Lowest price I could find. Seems HOT.

seems like a good deal, basically the same price as buying just the drive.

Personally if I needed that much storage space I would buy a pair of 400Gb drives and enclosures and save about $100

With all the deals going around, they make this drive look like crap. There are $60 AR deals for 250GB Seagate drive, pick up 3 of them and RAID 'em and you have a 750GB drive. For much, much less money. The only time, IMO, that you really need this drive is if you need 2TB or more of storage, and buying 10x 250GB drives is just crazy.

Its still a single drive which means less power. awesome for a movie or music drive... or even an desktop "imaging" drive

Fantastic to have just short of 1 TB of space, on a single drive.
But how the heck to back up valuable data on such a monster???

@ ~5GB / DVD platter, that would be 150 DVDs (@ ~50¢ / DVD, $75 per full backup?)!!!
Even 20GB Blu-Ray somethings would mean 35 platters!


(Hardware) Mirroring (RAID 1) the most practical way to go, for small shops?
Buy 2 750GB drives, but only get 1 750GBs worth of usable space?
(Hopefully get 1/2 the access time and twice the transfer rate, for read activity?)
The drive that does *NOT* fail first, by definition, is the backup???

Only a 1 year warranty on Seagate external drives, compared to 5 year on internal drives.

Was already Offered at $299 at Outpost F/S no rebate.
And was offered offered at COMPUSA for $279 with a rebate.

Not a HOT deal, IMHO.

Actually the $279/$299 deals were for INTERNAL versions.
So this deal is pretty good.

Might do a little better with the internal plus your own firewire/USB case.
But the OP is NOT bad deal.

After all is said and done, a mirror drive the most practical / cost effective method to backup?

Then whata' ya' do, when that duplicate dies before getting a new second drive?

Your life's work / archive wiped out?

If the data is deemed to be that important, then justifying the additional expense for Raid 5 or other,(or more redundant) backup solution should be a non-issue IMO.

its an ok deal i guess.


the thing is the 1 year warranty. the 5 year warranty drive is $299 at frys/ outpost all the time. so you could get tha tand a case and be better off. though i guess you wouldn thave a seagate external case, with backup softwares.

Most drives only use 1-2A when spinning up. And multiple drives start using the 3.3V rail.
Very insignificant.

RAID 5 is still not a backup,. It's better then nothing, but not a backup. Also, data backups are different then system backups for rapid system restoration.

The way to protect data is two fold. Hardware redundancy and data backup.

A) Keep your system disk and any important data on RAID 1 or RAID 5 arrays.
B) Backup Data to an external device that you can store offline. Such as a 750GB external drive.


This should also work well for straight system restore backups. 750GB external drive + Drive imaging program.
