This in and of itself is a pretty good deal. But at my local best buy there was an additional shelf label stating that you get a digital research 40x CDRW drive FREE with the purchase of this seagate drive. The BB clerk said that buying the two together would yield an additional rebate that would cover the cost of the cdrw drive. Unfortunately I can't find any reference to this free cdrw deal on the website.

I'm not entirely confident that the clerk was right, so I'd make sure you had all your rebates in hand before leaving the store.

Good deal. OEM on this drive is still ~$110 at NewEgg.

There is no "other" $50 dollar rebate. I went to Best Buy and talked to one of the managers and even she told me that it is a shady twist of words. You can buy the drive for $139 and in essence get the burner for free if you take into account the $50 rebate on the HDD and the $20 on the burner. So you're not really getting the burner for free, you are using your $50 rebate to make it "feel" free.

I said no thanks but then saw an open box Seagate 80GB for $110 so I just got that and the rebate with it. If anyone finds a way to make this work let me know as i would love to get an "actual" free burner.

Hmmm, may have to jump on this. My virtually new +/- 3 months old Maxtor 80GB just died. They are suppose to be sending me a replacement but I'm not sure I want to wait.
How does it compare to the DiamondMax Plus D740X?
Another thing is the seagate has a 9.4 ms seek time while the maxtor is <8ms seek time. Will this be a "noticeable" difference?

I think the HD is only ATA100

yes it is only ATA 100.

with the seek time you will probably only notice a difference if you are using it in a digital audio workstation environment where you would be utilizing numerous files off the drive at the same time (mixing)

I know that the drive is only ata100 but would it still work @ata100 when hooked up to a ata133 controller card? Kinda like if my motherboard was ata133 and I hooked the drive up to it.
As long as it will work it doesn't matter to me. After all I can't even tell the difference between my old IBM 5400 ata100 and the newley deceased Maxtor 7200rpm ata133.

I'm no expert but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work. The IDE interface is usually backwords compatible speed-wise (just use the right cable).
