Ahhh, stupid HotDeal forum. Must stay away from another 80GB HD... must resist.

Does anyone know of a good deal on 80GB ATA133 HD's? Thinking about going RAID in my system. Is it really gonna matter that much that one drive is 133 and another might be 100? Thx.

For what it's worth...

this is a pretty nice drive, but do two things to it.

1: remove the foam from the underside of the drive...it'll drop temps about 3-4C
2: disable the accoustic management (util avail on segate site) for faster seeks

Unless you have a super quiet room and super quiet system, you won't hear the added noise except during heaving read/writes.
Step 2 creates the most added noise, but definitly do step 1 for potential heat issues.

My $.02

By the way if anyones picky and prefers Maxtor and/or ATA 133, you can also get the 80GB DiamondMax D740X Internal EIDE Ultra ATA/133 7200RPM Hard Drive for an extra $10 at 101.66 shipped overnight.

I was all set to get the seagate but hesitated when I learned that the hard drive that died on one of 6 new systems we purchased 3 months ago was the exact same seagate drive. still 1 outta 6 aint too bad and seagate is very good about returns/exchanges.

have couple questions about this drive:

1. do you know what are the seek gains / noise increase by doing this? wonder if it's worth sacrificing decibels for ms seek time?
2. also does anyone know what is the purpose of the foam in those drives? noise dampening or what?
3. anyone had to use the warranty on this drive? dell website says 3 year warranty but doesn't say if it's dell or manufacturer?

i own 5 of these babies and plan on getting 3 more ... very quiet and reliable drive so far ... no problems for the 6 months i've had them!

Are Dell coupons one time use only? I couldn't use it yesterday on this drive. I purchased it yesterday, sure I can get it for the same price as NewEgg, but the free overnight was nice

That's the 10% off code that I used and it worked - just not the first couple of times. Sometimes Dell's site is goofy.

Excellent deal and find...

I cannot resist to get another one.
I bought one on Ebay for $100 shipped three weeks ago.

About the 10% coupon code, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
Dell's site has some flaws. Apply the coupon code several times and you should be able to get it to work. I have to empty my cart, and refresh my browser several times to get the coupon code to work.

I went I went all the way til last click to confirm order but no 10%. I thought 10% automatically shows up when you add to card. I can't find the Code at FW either. Please PM the code.

This way works...

Goto www.dell.com
click "Home & Home Office"
click "Software and Peripherals"
type "231596-6" in the 'search for products' textfield and click 'search'
click the link for seagate drive that displays
click "add to cart"
click "Proceed to Cart & Checkout"
enter the coupon code in the box and click 'Apply coupon'

You should see $9.94 in the discount section.

Google search for dell coupons. There is one that currently expires on 8/2/02 that ends with the characters 'C267'. This one gives a 10% discount.

1. Seek gains, if I remember right were about 1-2ms, or about %20 improvement. I used HD tach 2.61, Win2k NTFS
2. Foam has 2 purposes. One is noise dampening (minor), other is much more important.....it keeps users's fingers off the PCB and from ESD killing the drive. Since I follow anti-ESD when working on my system, I just remove the foam for cooling purposes.
3. Warranty is with Seagate.

hope this helps.
