Pretty nutty that you can get that kind of storage in a singe drive for under three hundred bucks! I'm not quite sure what it formats out to (RaidCalc says 7.45TB), but you should lose at least 500 gigs in formatting (crazy!). 10TB drives are also rumored to ship later this year, although they may be dependent on HAMR (heat-assisted magnetic recording) technology being released:

Nice price. Almost same per/TB price as the current 4TB on sale. I'm going to wait though a couple of years to see how the new shingled drives hold up. There is talk in storage sub-forum that Seagate actually put an expected life-time write limit on these new shingled drives and nobody knows what to make of it. I'm not running out of space on my file server yet, so I'm in a good position to wait it out until we know more about how this technology performs and until Seagate works out the kinks - would not want to get caught with my pants down due to buggy firmware as it happened in the past.

But anyway, I'm excited that the price is not too high for a first release. The rest will sort itself out.

Price is nice if you have a need for a large HDD. My personal experience is that larger HDDs have a higher failure rate (although I haven't tried SMR yet), but at this price I'm encouraged to experiment, especially in a redundant array.

I'm glad hdd are getting bigger but the price has never returned to where was a few years back. Bought a 1.5 WD black edition for $59. I wish I bough a few more at the time.

I'm really tempted to jump on these. I'm running a RAID 6 array in my computer, composed of four 4 TB drives, it'd be really awesome to double my capacity for a little over $1000.

I'm wondering if maybe I should just take the chance though? They have a 3 year warranty, and I suspect in 3 years I'll be upgrading again to 12 / 16 TB drives.

OTOH, might be wise to wait for a Backblaze Reliability Report.

I ordered one of the internal drives at Provantage. They are not in stock and there ship time shows 31 days. As it is not critical for me to have this drive, I can wait. Price is right at $241.69.
I've done business with this company in the past and they have always been good to deal with.

So they expect a high ratio of reads to writes. I expect these will be good for media storage, movies for instance.

Yeah, I think they're comparing it to smaller SSD's, which are more speed-oriented than storage-oriented (but it sounds funny to say 'designed for storage', haha). Consumer-grade ones only go up to like a terabyte, for the same price as an 8TB mechanical.
