I've used Maxtor, Western Digital, Seagate, and IBM (SCSI). Haven't had many problems with any of them. Hope maxtor works out for you.

my other rma of a 1yr old rma? oh, the warrantee only applies to the original drive should make an exception for excessively short life.

double rma fun with maxtor!! grrrrrr

Heheheh. It wasn't Maxtor.... it was another dead SEAGATE.

I said it before, After many years of trouble free HD use I think it's my turn to get skroood by the computer gremlins. I've read tons of info on Seagates from review sites and users. Each one says they are great drives.

I'll give Samsung a shot. NE has a 160g 7200\8m cache for $100 shipped. Reviews and users favor it over Maxtor and many WD's. Hitachi shows up good as well but some complain that it runs hotter than others and also makes a meow sound. Go figure...

ah, yea well the hitachis have 3 yr warrantees, thats the most recent purchase for me. seagates might be worth looking at again since thye have 5 yr warrantees now.
no meow so far ..atleast i haven't noticed

But i know many people love their IBMs, so it's purely a personal preference thing for me.

YUP! IBM lover over here.

It only makes that noise every so often - you get used to it >>> just the disk error check thing running.

Besides, i only think that was an issue for the 180GXP Deskstars. I own Hitachi/IBM Deskstars of the following models; 120GXP, 180GXP and 7k250 >>> only the 180GXP makes that noise. NONE have failed on me either

I've had strange luck with drives. My Seagate just crashed too. Not completely, but it locks up intermittently and freezes Windows when it fails. It goes into a nonstop head clicking and spin up, spin down cycle. I had time to copy off all my data fortunately. Reading the SMART stats in SMARTUDM show some read errors and some hardware ECC recovered, but not bad enough to RMA it. Seagate's Seatools says it's OK . It's a pretty old ST340825A, a 40GB 5400rpm drive. I bought it a few months AFTER an IBM 75GXP. Amazingly that 75GXP is still going strong after 4 years, but I don't trust it with any important data. It makes some strange head clicking noises sometimes (thermal calibration?) but doesn't seem to be a problem.

I've had way too many Maxtors die on me to trust them anymore. Of the 3 Maxtors I've ever owned, 2 of them have died, and the replacement of one died as well. There is a reason they only offer a 1 year warranty. BTW these were all DiamondMax Plus 9's.

Even though I work for Seagate ( how's that....) I have 6 PCs at home with a variety of drives. I have never had any fail even with teenagers and all their friends constantly torturing the things. Well, one Maxtor failed but that was because my son plugged it in without turning the power off but they quickly replaced it anyway.

BUT...many tests and reviews show that Seagates are the most dependable. Newer Maxtors in particular are having problems. That's probably why they led the pack in going to a one year warranty. I spend alot of time at small computer shops in the area and many of them are reporting Maxtors failing in just over a year. But..even though the rate compared with other drives may be high, it's not going to be a very large portion.

ALSO....make sure you unplug your computer and hit the power switch to drain the capacitors before installing your drive. The newer drives may be more sensitive to shocking that older drives.
