I think BB messed up on the descriptions on their website. They have both Seagate models ST380013AR and ST380013AS listed as serial but the ST380013AR should really be IDE. ST380013AS should be serial. The SKU for the ST380013AR matches the BB ad 5566979 but in the ad they list the model number as ST380013A with no R or S on the end.

I was at Seagate's site yesterday and did search for the # of the 80gb CompUSA has for sale and BOTH the IDE and SATA drives came up! So, they too either have them wrong or it's the same # for both IDE and SATA.

Is the Best Buy 80 gb hard drive a serial drive? It's listed that way on their web site. I don't want the serial drive. I want the IDE.

You shouldn't need a paper, they have the ad in pdf here . I still don't see any Seagate larger than 80gb there.

Why isn't CUSA giving you the $10 instant rebate online even though it breaks it down this way on the sales page with the hard drive. It says $10 instant, making it $99.99 - $50 MIR, yet it doesn't take the $10 off when you add it to the cart.

That was the case earlier today. See my post above where I deleted the text. I was about to mention that this problem was occurring at the compusa.com site TOO, and it WAS, but they fixed it about 30 minutes ago. So now at the public site the IR's are working. However at the biz site the IR's still are not working and the a$$holes won't answer the damn phone or email.

Yes, I just checked again and the IR's on the page for this HD is working OK. Link .
Regular Retail Price: $109.99
-$10.00 Internet Instant Savings

You Pay: $99.99 Price after instant rebates, if any
-$50.00 Mfr. Mail-in Rebate

CompUSA Price: $49.99 Price after instant & mail-in rebates

Never mind (again!!) I see what you're saying now, they still haven't got that crap fixed yet. At least now it's showing up correctly on the rebates page, but I see (like you said) it STILL won't work when you add it to the basket. Someone needs to call and let these microcephalic jerks know this. I've already "put my 20 minutes in" on hold. Still no reply to my emails either.

That's what I hate about CrapUSA. You can't get anyone on the phone. If I order it at the $109 price and then try to get it fixed later, I'd probably have to drive to the damn store anyway to get it worked out.

BTW.. Your link nor any link is giving me the drive for $99.99. It's still $109 for me. :|

read what it says at the bottom of the product page "Pricing and availability information is up-to-date as of 10/4/2003 10:02:28 AM. Listed prices are national prices, and actual retail prices may vary by market. Products are sold on a first come, first serve basis. "

in other words, the reason why the new price hasn't shown up yet is because they database has not been updated! (sale starts 10/5) so apparently they don't work Sundays, most likely it will be updated tomorrow

They appear to have them fixed now. At least they are working at the biz site. BTW, at least as far as this 80gb Seagate goes and ECDC 6; the ONLINE prices are CHEAPER than the B&M prices. What they have listed in the flyers is ONLY the ONLINE prices. $10 cheaper for the HD and $30 cheaper online for ECDC 6.

Go figure. I got tired of waiting for them to change their online price, so I decided to just buy at it the B&M. When I got there, it was $109 and I wasn't sure what was up. I told the CSR that I thought the price had a $10 instant rebate. He checked online and sure enough, they had changed the price. I wasn't aware of two separate prices though for in-store and internet because I didn't look closely enough. The CSR ended up giving me the $99 price anyway, so I'm happy.

My Avermedia rebate from cusa went to Niagara Falls. I recieved the rebate. It seemed to take a bit long but did arrive. One thing though. There was no tracking for it. On cusa's website the rebate tracking works by selecting the rebate address and a Niagara Falls address was not listed. That may have changed by now but make sure you save a reabte printout for yourself, so as to have contact info..

Here is how I interpet the specifications for the 80 GB Seagate and Maxtor drives. They seem very close. (I don't know how to make these charts look better.)

Power Seagate Maxtor
Seek (watts) 12.5 11.9
Idle (watts) 7.5 7.2
Standby (watts) 0.7 0.9

Acoustics Seagate Maxtor
Idle (bel) <2.5 <=2.7
Seek (bel) 3.7 3.5
Seek* (bel) 3.0 -
*Seagate quiet mode

Q.Does anyone know how to enable the "quiet mode" of the Seagate?
[EDIT OCT 9]
A. I asked Seagate Tech Support and this was the response.
"Seagate has decided that we will no longer support AAM (Automatic Acoustic Management).
Seagate is in the process of removing all product information pertaining to the support of AAM.

Our drives are extremely quiet while operating at the highest performance
levels, so we believe the ability to switch between Modes is unnecessary."

60GB Seagate V series

For the 80gb seagate they are selling at compusa here are the specs (st380013a):

Idle - 2.5 compared to 2.1
quiet seek - 2.8 compared to 2.65
performance seek - 3.4 compared to 3.5

A little louder...but you will never notice the difference.

you are wrong. a 3dB increase is twice the power, but not perceived by the human as being twice as loud. take one fan or speaker, hypothectically say it is 40dB. now add an identical fan/speaker, it is now 43dB. but the ear doesn't perceive it as being twice as loud. you need an increase of 10dB for the human ear to perceive something as being twice as loud. different scales.

a 3 dB increase is slightly louder.

Right, 3db is supposed to be the least amount of acoustical output change a healthy human ear can hear and it takes twice the output to achieve that, but this is with loudspeakers & amps. I don't know if the same would hold true in non-transducer/loudspeaker comparisons.
