I actually ordered this a day before the promo sale came out for $105. I have two of them in my NAS and so far have worked flawlessly.

1/5th of Newegg reviews give it 1 star!!! Most of those 1 stars involve drive failure. Seagate has not learned the lesson of the past... clearly.

Unless Newegg has improved its product packaging for shipping hard drives, a lot of those 1-star reviews are Newegg's fault.

I can't tell you how many times in the past (before I stopped buying from them) that I had received hard drives from them that were just bouncing around loose in a box, the drives in an anti-static bag, wrapped once around with a strip of tiny bubble wrap and a wad or two of brown paper for padding.

I buy lots of things from Newegg, but hard drives ain't one of them.

Actually, this is how the HDD was packaged when I received it. Fully encased bubble wrap that is shaped to have the HDD fully enclosed.

About freakin' time - only took them over 10 years to admit there was a problem there. The worst part is that, over the years, I'd have paid a little extra for better packaging rather than deal with RMAs. Since it was never an option with Newegg, though, I'd started buying all my hard drives from Amazon (who always did a good job on the packaging front).

Maybe I'll have to give Newegg a try again - we'll see...

Not to be picky or anything, but please work on your title length.

Rather than truncating the end it would be better to stick with less info like "Seagate 3TB HDD $100 at Newegg.

^ Mine is to follow the UPS and (IIRC) Fedex guidelines that it have 2" between all sides and the box, and obviously that space filled with packing material so the product can't shift around to end up closer than 2".

It's still an improvement though, compared to the p!ss poor job they do on some products by just putting product directly on the bottom of the box then throwing a wad of crumpled paper on top.

I hadn't written much about that when shipping was *free* (though we know it never really is), but now that the price of many items seems to have risen with shipping charges in their attempt to push their Premier membership, they need to try a little harder.

fyi not rated for 24/7

Sadly, these two things are related. The DOA reviews on Newegg are mostly Newegg's fault, but there are lots of users reporting failures about 7-10 months in. This is a known problem where the heads wear down over time. The less you use the drive, the less the head suffers, hence they will not warrant the drive if you run it beyond the rated workload. The drive records its usage, so they'll know. According to the manual:

Rated workload: Average rate of <55TB/year. The MTBF specification for the drive assumes the I/O workload does not exceed the average annualized workload rate limit of 55TB/year. Workloads exceeding the annualized rate may degrade the drive MTBF and impact product reliability. The average annualized workload rate limit is in units of TB per year, or TB per 8760 power-on hours. Workload rate limit = TB transferred × (8760/recorded power-on hours).

Ironically, 55TB/year on a 3TB HDD means it's about 100 times less durable than an typical MLC SSD. But that's really just Seagate covering their asses on the warranty. The great majority of these drives won't have any issues with head wear; it's a contamination problem, so it varies enormously from batch to batch and improves modestly from generation to generation. The problem was incredibly bad in the 7200.11 era and the technology to get rid of it is only now showing up in the Constellation ES.3 line. So it's unfair to say that Seagate isn't learning from their mistakes, as it takes many years to push fixes through the pipeline. But it is fair to say that they should have known about this problem to begin with.

At least with respect to head wear, even a bad unit should work just fine if you use it within the stated limits... which I'm not, so that's equivalent to gambling on having good units.

Don't read too far into Newegg reviews. Half the hard drives I've received from Newegg since 2004 were DOA or spun short lives, regardless of brand.

They randomly package drives like shit. It's a draw. You may get the pothead packing the drive, and if you're lucky, the obsessive compulsive packing the drive.

Can't really blame Newegg... today when I was giving my packages to a UPS driver with a full truck, he used a package like a stand stool to put my packages on the top... the guy weighs at least 200lbs and he was standing on the square package for at least 5 minutes bouncing up and down to load my packages.... if the stepped on package did not contain clothes nothing else would survive that!
