Fry's is currently selling the king of the quiet drives, the Seagate Barracuda 80GB for $59.

This is valid at the SF Bay Area Fry's stores. I don't know about other areas.

The listing in the paper says the sale ends today. (Although many Fry's sale prices are extended in their next ad..)

Got one for a relative buildint a system. Great deal if you need a quiet drive and don't want rebate hassles. Although the king of quiet drives has to be the 40gb barracuda, absolutely silent. My 120gb barracuda 7200.7 still makes some noise when doing lots of seeking, although some harddrive grommets might fix the problem. But still, any given barracuda IV or higher hard drives are more silent than any other brand 7200rpm hard drive out on the market.

My Maxtor is pretty quiet too. I can't even hear it over the heatsink of my P4 and all the case fans.

I'd recommend against a seagate. Compusa has the Maxtor 200GB for $129.

I don't think I would ever reccomend against a Seagate.

Awesome. Have one in my livingroom computer. Thanks to that and the panaflo's, it is extremely silent. Except for that damn cdrom.

I don't mind the sound of head movement, in fact I rather like the audible feedback. What drives me nuts late at night is the high-pitched whine of most HDDs when rotating.

Love my Barracuda V 80GB. I can't tell any performance difference compared to a WD 80GB JB (8MB cache).
