Can I RAID with a Western Digital 80 gig or does it have to be the same manufacturer as well as the same size?

Just ordered it, than I downloaded the rebate. The drive is a retail boxed unit, the rebate is for a BARE drive. Should I worry??

I received plain brown box version of the drive. Included drive, cd, and a small manual.

I had a Seagate that gave me about 3.5 years of solid performance. That one was loud. I forget where but I've read that the barracuda IV's are pretty dependable. All the hard drive manufacturers have cleaned up their act of late and so are producing solid hard drives, except maybe IBM who have a lawsuit against them for defective drives - but what do I know, I own one of those so called defective pieces and it runs fine for me.

For people that ordered today, since it said Call for Availability on the page, I called at abput 5PM PST, and they said they were really low on stock and the CSR said the computer didn't say when they were going to restock, so hope for the best.

received mine today - question about the rebate form

it asks for the "Barracud ATA IV 80GB Bare Hard Drive Part Number"

there are 2 numbers below the serial number, "P/N" and "HDA P/N", anyone know which one they need for the rebate ??

Good luck in a raid config.

<< Why is my Seagate Barracuda IV so slow in RAID-0 configuration? >>

<< To paraphrase Seagate technical support, the Seagate is so fast that the RAID controller can't buffer the data quickly enough and so the disk has to read everything twice and hence runs much slower. So there you have it: the disk is so fast it is actually much slower. Seagate do not have a firmware fix at the present time as they claim they are waiting "for the rest of the industry to catch up". See this thread at Storage Review forums for more details. The problem has been reported on several different motherboard chipsets and several different RAID controllers. The problem is not specific to ABIT motherboards. Some people have reported success by putting the disks on separate IDE controllers. >>

Does anyone know, does outpost usually take a long time to ship things that are backordered?

This was my exact problem with an Abit TH7II. I replaced them with IBM's. I still like the Baracuda IV and just bought the 80GB for non raid. I order on Monday and got it today.

Wow, blazing fast service for a blazing hot* deal (at least in OH)

I got mine 18 hours after I placed the order yesterday afternoon. This thing is not on backorder, maybe only in certain regions.

Thanks for informing me about the RAID thing, I'll keep that in mind.

I want this hard drive because it's VERY quiet... decible ratings are so much lower than any other 7200 rpm drive.
